sometimes it's profoundly weird to me how different my life is compared to three years ago. three years ago yesterday, i received my third layoff notice of 2020. i was half way through an 11 day shift, had not slept on my own bed in a week.

This wasn’t a casual party, one that spontaneous started, because the crew was in the mood to celebrate life or whatever. No, this party was a huge birthday party, celebrating all the brothers and sister, who’d gotten a year older this month. This was how the crew could handle all the birthdays on the ship and those who didn’t like to be celebrated could simply hide among the others. It was a win-win situation, especially for the kitchen staff whom wouldn’t need to go over the top every single day.

You were sitting on the stairs on deck, a bottle in your hand, chattering with some of the ‘birthday kids’. Still, your eyes searched for your boyfriend, who’d promised he would be right back and that was an hour ago. Not that you were bored or worried, you just missed him. The two of you were still at the beginning of your relationship and every minute you could spend together, you did.

As you laughed at the joke, you suddenly felt strong arms around your waist and you were lifted up. A yelp escaped your lips and you turned your head, only to see the man that made your heart beat a mile per second. Vista grinned at you and sat down, placing you on his lap. You automatically leaned closer to him, enjoying his warmth.

“Did Speed Jiru lure you into a game of poker?” You chuckled, curious to know where he’d been the past hour. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d been lured into a game of poker, but you were happy he hadn’t lost his clothes this time around or at least managed to get dressed again if so. You were not a fan of that, but also knew you couldn’t really change him. Besides, you actually didn’t mind seeing him shirtless, after all a lot of the crew was shirtless.

“No, but I had to help a few drunk brothers back to bed. Sorry I kept you waiting, sweetie.” He chuckled into your ear, making you chuckle too. It hadn’t been on purpose that he kept you waiting and his thoughts had been on you and now he was going to stay with you for the rest of the night.

“How typical. They’re going to miss the best part of the party.” You leaned back and tilted you head, so you could see the sky and part of his face. He had that warm and happy smile on his lips and was looking down at you. It made your heart flutter and for a brief moment you forgot everything around you. How you’d managed to get with him was still a mystery to you, but you were happy it happened.

A few moments passed, before you heard the loud bang and you turned your attention back to the sky. The fireworks had started and that was the best part of these huge parties. Only at the birthday parties and New Year did the crew use fireworks. Beautiful colors lit up the sky and you snuggled closer to Vista, feeling his arms around you, holding you tight. It was actually much more beautiful watching the fireworks with Vista at your side.
