WELL my friend since you asked so nicely-

first, start out with a base color (I always use blue but technically you could use a green or purple or just something completely different if you're feeling real funky) and some stripes of different stuffs at the top and bottom

Then you smudge those motherfuckers

then, a step that is completely optional- you add bubbles! you can make these look real nice, but I usually just do a solid colored circle with a little dot of a lighter color. I had to turn down the opacity on these bois 'cause I used too strong of a color

next you add an overlay! this is one step I didn't do on the picture of Brine, but I like how it looks. this overlay made it look a bit darker, but you can also use overlays of different shades to make it look brighter, grayer, more vibrant, or just anything you want to!

aaand finally you add sunbeams! just take a wide brush and paint some lines. for the water pictures I've posted so far, I've done yellow ones, but you can totally experiment with these! you can do yellow ones, white ones- I find that light blue ones give it more of a deep sea feel

tbh i usually would use a stock photo but i wanted to handpaint it all using a reference. steps-wise: i blocked in the body of water, coloured it using some nice gradients, added the foam and created the texture of the water using a speckled brush. i used the same texture on the beach, but it’s pretty glossy in itself so it didn’t need much detail.

i’m a fan of blurry backgrounds, but they look more believable if you have something to actually blur - so there’s not way around actually drawing the background. it doesn’t need to be very detailed (clearly lol), just enough to trick the eye! it would look pretty poor if i didn’t have the texture and foam to blur and it was just a blue void.
