Common Waterbuck by cirdantravels (Fons Buts) bull in his prime in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa as their name indicates Waterbucks live close to water. They like areas with long grass or reed beds but can also be found in woodland. That evening, the mother went back to their kill and did something we didn’t really understand (and still don’t): She dragged it out from her good hiding place more into the open.  It was pretty well hidden from all the tall grass, which you can get a good look at in these images, but it wasn’t nearly as well hidden as it was when it was in the heavy scrub.  At the time, we really had no idea why she’d do that; at first, we thought she might be dragging it somewhere some distance away, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.  She simply dragged it a bit into the grass and left it there, before heading into the opening to lay down and rest for the evening.

Of course, the problem with this is, more in the open, other animals are more likely to find their kill...

(It’s also worth pointing out...  This is still only on the first full day I was there, after the half-day when I arrived.  All this, thus far, was seen in only three game drives, and there is still so, so much more to come!)
