The music video for Practice by Jamila Woods is a visual hand game. A playful story told by the hands but supported by the feet and many naked bodies. The visuals come together to create “the best naked hand puppet show” (@curiousgemini, 2023). It's like The Muppets. It feels silly and intimate, like your very first kiss. The choreography is suggestive but you almost miss it because of its vulnerable nature. There are moments of the surreal when bodies actually seem to blend into one another, forming a singular entity; the various talking faces throughout and the two human-like figures coming together at the end. This music video takes you to school and Miss Jamila is the teacher; it is educational and fun. It's like Sesame Street. Practice by Jamila Woods should be a required view in sex ed class where we learn "the art of bodies coming together" (@amberonline, 2023). Practice is only one layer of the onion that is her new album, Water Made Us. We, the audience, get to peel back all 17 tracks and 45 minutes of it. Unraveling a new chapter in Jamila Woods musical evolution, where she explores the themes of romantic love as “the manifestations of self love” (@de_cre_vi, 2023). LEGACY! LEGACY! helped me quit my job back in 2020 so hopefully Water Made Us will bring me love.. god it is me again<3
