I was talking about this with my friend earlier but like artificial watermelon tastes and smells nothing like actual watermelon so like where did that come from? 

What if they just mixed strawberry and raspberry or something and decided to call that watermelon and told millions of people that it's watermelon and now that smell and taste evoke images of ripe watermelon from the unsuspecting hoi polloi when actually its all been a lie?
