Okay so take the idea of idols right?
and then take the idea of Magical Girls
And lastly take the idea of Mecha
Mix all three together and you get Symphogear. Girls who magically transform into mecha looking armor bits and weapons and clothing to match, while having to sing while they fight to increase their power. The higher the symphonic level, the more powerful they are.
Oh and like, every girl has their own genre of music associated with them, and all the songs are so good. Just... literally I could open up any song from the first three seasons (because that’s what I have rn) and I could jam out to any of them. Hell, one of the best songs is a song that’s sung by some of the side characters and it’s just a funny little song that has nothing to do with fighting or anything, but it’s a good song!
You also got some VAs in it you might recognize such as Aoi Yūki and Nana Mizuki to name two of them.
Oh man and don’t even get me started about the plot of the whole show. It’s one of those animes that will grip you with every episode and make you want to keep going just to know what happens next. I was with Vivi last night listening to her freak out about everything and just have to keep going. She had to FORCE herself to stop bc it was late but the PLOT WAS THAT GOOD OKAY??? IT GRIPS YOU AND MAKES YOU CRAVE FOR MORE TO KNOW WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN!
It was torture for me since I was all caught up and had to wait a whole week to know what happens... God I hated those days I was just sitting there like “WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MAH GIRLS ANIMU?!?!?!”
Oh and also it has a lot of heavily implied yuri too. Many girls liking girls, and a lot of the song symbolize that, and while nothing has been like confirmed, it’s.... pretty obvious they are kinda gay... the lyrics of the songs and much more just show it. And it ain’t like the girls are singing about love for any boys since not a whole lot are even around. 👀👀👀
I just... this is a very good series and I really like it. It isn’t perfect, it does have its flaws, but nothing is perfect. Yes there is fanservice at times, it’s a thing that sadly happens as you get from season to season. I don’t remember much about season 4 and haven’t seen season 5 but I think they may have toned it down some by the last season? Or probably not. I also will advise that the first season has some... not great scenes that play out to one girl and may need a warning before you watch. At the very least a moment of when it happens so you know when to avoid the part or at least be prepared. Overall I love Symphogear and it’s a series i don’t talk about often but I never talk about any series too much.
Oh and I believe it has a canon trans woman so there’s that too. I like her, she is a valid woman.
