A Great Week
Great week at Watkinson School! This week I...
...had my students featured in the Climate Stew podcast, got to be an extra in the play, saw one of my students teach an entire class about salamanders, went with CAP and Global Studies to a talk about freedom of speech & Charlie Hebdo, went to a panel run by a student about Islam in America, had crawfish bisque for lunch, learned more about climate change from my Independent Study student, had a colleague help me dig out the storage shed to retrieve supplies, had the final meeting with my video game design club, started the Student Web Portfolio Workshop and started to solidify plans to return to Uganda this summer...
I also had chocolate dipped bananas for lunch, dissected sharks, heard Renaissance music at All School, watched a segment from the Daily Show with my Environmental Science class!!
I could go on, but needless to say...I love my job!!
The funny thing about my middle/high school's dress code was that they were so much more relaxed than, say, crosstown rivals (ish) Kingswood-Oxford but when I got there as a 7th grader, there was a rule designed to keep things somewhat classy that stood until the Great Dresscode Rebellion that I mentioned earlier. It was that no shirts were allowed to have any kind of logos or similar things on them bigger than a business card. This was designed to encourage nicer shirts. It sort of worked, though it was also flagrantly violated left and right. I'm 99% certain it was one of the things taken out of the re-negotiated post-Rebellion code that was in place for most of my time there as a high schooler. I don't think half my then-girlfriend's shirts would have flown under the original. Also weirdly enough, if we'd had a dresscode like K-O's, people probably wouldn't have been able to hate my girlfriend for her admittedly mostly terrible clothing choices. But...ergh, that's a terrible attitude. Yeesh. Stop saying that, self.
