𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙤: THE WINCHESTER MYSTERY HOUSE, ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND AND THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

YOU CAN SEE THE HOUSE from acres away. The strange, jutting angles of the roof, the 47 chimneys, the thousands and thousands of Tiffany brand window panes. As you get closer, creep past the gilded fences, you'll notice the oddities. The doors two stories up, leading to nothing. The eccentric patterns. You catch a glimpse of a young woman staring through a spider web. She's there, and then you doubt you saw her at all. You can see the house from acres away. Alice doesn't know this, though. She's never been outside the walls, her only company the souls her senile mother is so afraid of. The day she falls, she is less than surprised to find they all know her name.

THE HOUSE HAUNTED JEREMIAH long before he haunted it. Growing up as the boy next door, he was obsessed with the mysteries of the home, particularly the girl he’d see peeking through the windows. At nineteen, he enlisted to become one of the carpenters that worked on the house, day and night, hoping to catch a closer glimpse. She remained elusive, only a glimpse of a blue dress around a corner, a flash of brown hair before he blinks. A distant laugh that might’ve been her, or might’ve been his imagination.

A gunshot ended it all, as it always did. When he woke, he thought he’d survived, until he noticed that the house was... wrong. Parallel. Almost wonderful, in a sick, twisted way. And filled with others. But not her.

He died like them, they said. But he was the only one who had died on the grounds. This made him special. This made him chosen. 

Resentment now clouds his love for the house, chokes him like a bitter fog. He was the Red King, and he would have his revenge.

HER NAME WAS ONCE ANNIE. Annie Pardee Winchester. She died only 40 days after her birth, a disease of malnutrition forcing her body to turn on itself.

The day she was reborn, her mother christened her Alice, to confuse the souls that inhabited their strange home. Of course, it didn't work. Any daughter of Sarah Winchester is a daughter they had to have. 

Alice grows with the house, and the house grows with her. Another nail is hammered into the wall, another day is added to her life. She survives off of what the house provides; the little cakes that read EAT ME, the glass bottles, the same. She blends into the walls, and her mother flinches when she sees her, barely ever touches her.

Alice grows with the house, and the house grows with her. She talks to the walls, freely, and the walls whisper back. She never notices the resentment bubbling behind their words. They will have her. And she will be their Red Queen.

CLEO SWEARS THE HOUSE is caught in time. Ever since her mother started working as the infamous Winchester Mystery House’s newest tour guide, Cleo practically lives in the unusual mansion, and even now, she can feel the ghosts of the past glaring at her, as though just barely holding back from being fully present. Sometimes, she knows she sees the walls shift, the staircases rearranging before her eyes. 

The first time she sees the girl, she thinks she must be a performer her mother has hired to host some sort of interactive tour. She tries to call out to her; it’d be nice to have someone around her own age to talk to. The house can be all-consuming, overwhelming. The girl doesn’t react; she must not have heard her. Then she walks through a wall.

Cleo knows something is up with this house, far more tangled and menacing than any of the legends make it out to be, and she’s determined to find out what. As Cleo’s reality bends, twists and knots, she begins to wonder who the Web is actually designed to catch.

RED-TINGED CHEEKS AND FINGERS. Dried blood down the corners of his mouth and dripping from his ears. The hair left on his head falls out and grows back rapidly, and you’ll never catch his hands steady.

He’d always been a sickly child. His liver was never the picture of health, and when he started binding his breasts, his lungs suffered enormously. With the conditions in the factory, it was only a matter of time before the erethism set in.

The physical symptoms were nothing, nothing, compared to the rest of it. Hat after hat after hat after hat. He deteriorated into madness far before the Web could take his sanity from him as it did the others.

A gunshot ended it all, as it always did. The Web, a place where he was surrounded by people as sane as he was, was almost welcome.

Almost.

THE LATEST TREASURER OF WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS, Victor was no longer an outcast. His status was now one of security, luxury, wealth. He was far away from anyone who knew him how he once was, and 1882 was a time for the present. Of course, in this story, we have no time for timelines, and the Web has a dark twist of fate in store for him. 

A gunshot ended it all, as it always did. The rest of the Caught blame Alice for the creation of the Web. They blame her for everything from being dead in the first place to not being dead enough. And why shouldn’t they, they say? Her father is the one who created the weapons that killed them all. Someone has to pay, no matter if that someone pulled the trigger or not.

The fact of the matter is, someone did pull the trigger. The question is, is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or a boy dressed up as a king?
