This was reported by news outlets today. 🏒 The first commercial sticks were said to be created by the Mi’kmaq carvers in Nova Scotia 🏒 Chicago Blackhawk great Bobby Hull is often credited with inventing the curve of the blade of the hockey stick but it was actually teammate Stan Mikita who experimented with a broken blade shaped like a “V” who marveled at how well he could fire the puck with the broken blade 🏒 During the 80’s it was estimated that Wayne Gretzky used approximately 700 hockey sticks per season. Wayne Gretzky’s 92nd Goal Overshadowed Another NHL Record That Still Stands
Wayne Gretzky’s 92nd goal in 1981-82 is one of hockey’s most legendary moments. But, that same night, the Edmonton Oilers also set another NHL record that still stands today.
Mark Messier scored 14 seconds into the game against the Kings, and Dave Lumley followed just 10 seconds later. Their goals in the opening 24 seconds established the fastest two goals by one team to begin an NHL game.
Then Gretzky added No. 92 later in the night as the Oilers rolled to a 6-2 victory in Los Angeles.
We take a closer look at that game here: Messier Lumley NHL Record
Darryl Sutter’s First NHL Hat Trick Includes Two Shorthanded Goals vs. Oilers (1981)
Darryl Sutter’s first NHL hat trick came in unforgettable style on October 18, 1981 at Chicago Stadium. The Chicago Blackhawks forward scored three goals against the Edmonton Oilers, including two while shorthanded.
After Wayne Gretzky opened the scoring early for Edmonton, Sutter tied the game just minutes later with his first goal of the season on Andy Moog. Later in the first period, he struck again while killing a Denis Savard penalty, scoring a shorthanded goal to even the game at 2-2.
The hat trick was completed late in the third period. With Chicago protecting a one-goal lead and killing another penalty, Edmonton pulled Moog for the extra attacker. Sutter fired the puck the length of the ice into the empty net, his second shorthanded goal of the night, to seal the victory.
Sutter finished the game with eight shots on goal and recorded the first of three hat tricks in his NHL career. Wayne Gretzky led the Oilers with four points, while Doug Wilson added a goal and two assists for Chicago.
