september 1st is the cutoff in hogwarts if i recall correctly, which is why ron and hermoine could take their apparation tests early while harry had to wait

yes, sept 1st is the cut off but in harry's letter it said "we await your owl by no later than 31 july" so there was some sort of required acceptance to the acceptance letter (which brings up the idea that some people must say thanks but no thanks to attending hogwarts which to us seems crazy). hermione and ron were able to take their apparition test (during their 6th year, on a day set aside for their year to do so) and harry wasn't because they were already 17. harry, draco, and ernie were all left in potions class that day cuz they weren't 17 yet (and we know neville would have been in the school somewhere too).

“Sorry.”

She repositions herself, face down on the pillow, throwing her hands above her head, trying to get comfortable again, but his shoulder was warm where the pillow is not. He untangles his limbs from hers and if he could see her face, he’d see a look of reproach.

“If you were sorry, you would stay.”

Her words are muffled by the pillow and she feels a kiss on her bare shoulder that she half-heartedly tries to push away with a hand. She fails and he catches the offending hand with his own, twisting her arm behind her back before pressing another kiss to her fingers.

“Since you’re awake, will you make me some breakfast before I go?”

She turns her head from the pillow to look at him with narrowed eyes that narrow even further when met with the amusement in his.

“Please?”

He kisses each finger separately this time and she gives an affected little sigh and pulls her hand out of his grasp curtly. She lifts herself from the bed with the grace of a queen, though it was doubtful that there were many queens who would wake up in the morning looking quite so dishevelled. She hardly looked like she’d spent hours curling her hair and setting it in an updo the evening last. She sits on the edge of the bed and stretches lazily, her updo decimated where his fingers had raked through it and pulled it apart, remnant curls, soft and undefined as they were falling around her shoulders. She stands and tip toes over shoes and items of clothing, picking up a white dress shirt off the floor in the process and slipping her arms through the sleeves.

“You’re lucky I love you.”

She fastens two buttons on the shirt and walks out of the room and only realises what she’s said once she’s crossed the threshold and is out of sight.
