lately, jo togame has been weirdly gentle.
its not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it inherently uncommon; it's just… ah, how do you put this?
no one is allowed to touch his hair. nope, nuh uh, not in a million years. his hair is off limits.
but here's the catch. lately, he's been letting you touch his hair. not only that, but he lets you brush it and style it.
and it seems mundane, right? something nonsensical to be excited about or actively realise. but he's just been so gentle in mannerisms lately.
as life has it, today is one of many that follows suit of the last treacherous days. nothing goes right; you woke up late, skipped breakfast, got to school late, tripped up the stairs, got mocked… what a miserable life, it is.
getting mocked by the grade under you is more than enough social interaction for your already exhausted mind to cope with, thus you crash in an empty stairwell in the abandoned side of the school.
you thought it was that easy? “crash” twice; crash in your quiet spot and crash down the damn stairs. again.
you eventually sit up, bringing your aching knees to your chest and wrapping your arms over your shins. like a hug. like protection. like you're being held.
what a shitty day.
the lunch break isn't over yet, and it's too early to go home, especially since you arrived late. you could just skip the whole day in your little quiet space. yeah, maybe.
seconds of silence never stretched to minutes or feeling like hours; it's lonely. as tired as you are, maybe being alone just makes this a whole lot worse.
you lean your chin on your knees, zoning out. that's the last thing you remember before dozing off and waking up against someone's chest, with their arm wrapped around your shoulders.
you slowly blink into consciousness, blurry eyes registering an orange and white jacket on your lap, and messy black hair in the corner of your eye.
togame.
“you alright? he whispers, eyes not meeting yours.
you don't respond. and he doesn't get mad; he didn't make eye contact with you when asking so that you didn't feel pressured to answer.
is this a dream?
after a few moments of silence, he speaks up again, quietly. “one of choji’s mates saw you sleeping here and told me. have you eaten?”
you stay silent again, this time wondering if the words come out of your mouth manually or automatically.
“mm,” you open your mouth, nothing but a hum slipping out. he holds his breath for a second, listening closely.
words come out manually, apparently.
when he realises that you're not quite ready to talk yet, he takes your hand into his own and squeezes it tenderly.
he’s actually here.
“take your time,” he brings your intertwined hands to his mouth, pressing a long, feather-light kiss to the back of your hand. “i’m here, and i'm not going anywhere.”
he lets your hands fall comfortably into his lap, still laced with yours. you lean your head on his shoulder, feeling his own lean against yours lightly.
he's there, he definitely is.
minutes actually pass this time; they feel like forever. silence is still scary, but togame makes it all a little more bearable.
you want to ask him to talk. ramble on about his day and his latest fight; his interests and things he saw online that he thinks are totally epic and would want to do with you. talk about anything and everything, just don't be silent.
“today,” he starts, voice coming out awkwardly loud. “one of the guys were watching me tie my hair before coming to find you, and they whispered something to choji. when i grabbed my stuff, choji told me to, well,” he nervously scratches at the side of his neck, awkwardness clear in his voice. but so is the sincerity.
“hm?” you hum again, but this time, it sounds more like a response, rather than an absentminded groan.
“he told me to let you tie my hair, or something like that,” he turns his face to face slightly away, even though you two didn't make eye contact even now. “he says it's meant to calm you down.”
you hesitantly nod, watching as togame guides your hands to untie his rushed loop bun from earlier and turn it into a simple braid. it was weird, at first. you didn't want to make him uncomfortable, knowing he isn't too fond of having his hair touched. but you watch his lips curve into a smile when you stifle a giggle at how he tries to guide your hands and show you how to braid his hair backwards, at the same time.
maybe it was worth falling up and down the stairs today, along with all of the other mishaps. maybe the sudden surge of loneliness was a lesson, too. but the thing you learned today?
togame once jumped a guy for putting a ribbon in his hair, which is why he never lets anyone touch it. anyone except you, from now on.
