Shadowclan and kittypets have a weird relarionship.
I've always imagined Shadowclan to be struggling non-stop. They live in an area that is already scarce of normal prey, the humidity must be unbearable in the summer, and they just keep getting hit with sickness outbreaks.
So, their clan struggles, loses cats, gets aggressive towards the other clans for resources, the clans keep denying help because "it's evil Shadowclan", they get offended and tell the other leaders to fuck off, so they keep struggling. It's a vicious cycle.
So I always imagined them as... prouder than other cats. Not in a "Riverclan boasting about how beautiful their coat is", in a more "I am so much better than these other toad-heads because I work thrice as hard and yet get shunned" way, and this mindset is just perpetuated by the cycle above.
So what do kittypets have to do with this?
Well, Shadowclan, for generations, has their borders very close to Twolegplace. And I bet they lost many, many warriors during their time, to the point that sometimes the clan was waaay too small.
So I can see a Shadowclan warrior going there to grab some food during a famine and meeting some handsome street cat, or a patrol meeting a kittypet that takes pity on them and offers a hand.
I imagine at this point, half of Shadowclan (if not more) has kittypet blood in some way. But they'd be the disgrace of the Clans to admit so, and so it is kept hush-hush, and of course, used as leverage.
"Your littermate must be more kittypet than you, since they keep lazing about and sharing tongues."
"No, you may not be a Medicine Cat, your ancestors do not reside in the stars."
"I'm telling you, I can see that your kits look nothing like their parent, shut up before I make it real obvious to them too."
Silverflame joined only after hearing her youngest daughter Brightflower, who left their home not long before, was kitting. Archeye ran out of a hoarder's house and sought refuge. Nobody knows who Dawncloud's partner was, but she hung around Twolegdens a bit too much during her apprenticeship. Raggedstar killed his own father to bury that secret. Foxheart and Lizardstripe both ran away from their owner when they got big dogs.
It's an open secret, but the Clan is tired of hiding it, they do not want to be ashamed at the very least of where they actually belong.
So when Brokenstar begins to cast away some cats, he starts with the elders, considered useless in a preyless Leaf-fall. But then more and more are sent away, citing their kittypet blood as part of it. He sends into battle kits to see if they are truly more than their cursed blood. He claims land and drives out Windclan, pushing his cats further away from the town. He realized that there are few apprentices, and he has to act fast...
But he needs Clan blood, not kittypet blood. But the Clan does not always matter...
When he is overthrown, many cats could take the leadership role. Nightpelt was a popular choice for sure, he'd been the leader of all the elders and had immediately begun to rebuild camp as soon as Brokenstar was out. But deep down, maybe a lot of the cats, when choosing him, know that he comes from a line of purist cats, who never once intermingled with Kittypets... as far as they know.
Names taken from official media outside the books will have source brackets attached. Custom names will be marked with "+" at the end. Emojis indicating which clan have used what have been added as well, in case anyone cares about that. ¯\(ツ)/¯
✰ Note: you will need to add "view-source:" before "https://" to the links in order to see the actual information. Links with it already included seem to break. :/
The New Prophecy Quest was archived in the Flashpoint Archive. Alternatively there's an "gamenames.xml" archived from 2011, which is consistent with the game.
Consult StarClan for Your Warrior Name changed results between 2005 and 2009(?) So far I've only been able to locate one archived variant of "names.xml" from 2011. If anyone knows where to find the "clans.xml" file or pre-2009 variants, please let me know!
As for the warrior username generator... unfortunately now that it's gone and inoperable in the Wayback Machine I can't link back sources. I did collect them straight from the generator when it was live but "trust me bro" isn't a great reference, so... the best I could do was add other mentions of the names to back them up. Sorry.
[⚡] ThunderClan [🌳] SkyClan [🌪️] WindClan [🌊] RiverClan [👥] ShadowClan [🌩️] StormClan [🐾] means said fix isn't part of the traditional naming system and originated from outside the clans in some way (outsiders keeping their name, WarriorClan, etc...)

twins, redfoot (dark forest) and flaretail (starclan)
lore under cut
redfoot was an ambitious (charcoal bengal) she-cat from shadowclan, but was too reckless for her own good at times. shortly after being made a warrior, she was sent to riverclan with a patrol, which turned into a full-blown fight against the clan. as the fight escalated, the riverclan medicine cat cloudfrost, ended up mixed into the fight when he tried to heal injured cats, but he got in between redfoot and another riverclan warrior, causing her to become confused and attack cloudfrost by mistake. cloudfrost was struck badly, and died from his wounds.
afterwards, clans shamed her for her deed, leaving the only cat who still spoke with her to be her twin brother, flaretail. she ended up being exiled from the clan for killing a medicine cat, despite protests from her brother. she tried living as a rogue with her knowledge of being a warrior, but eventually she was ambushed by a rabid dog that viciously began attacking her. a thunderclan and a shadowclan patrol passed by the area at the time, but upon seeing that it was redfoot who was being attacked, did nothing to stop it. redfoot then died, and was sent to the dark forest, to her shock as she protested that she hadn’t meant to injure a medicine cat, but for whatever reason, starclan ignores her and leaves her there.
she grew bitter and hateful for the clans, and managed to lure her brother in his dreams into speaking to her in the dark forest. to her surprise, he was more than willing to cause pain to the clans as well, for what they did to her. she tells flaretail that she doesn’t want him to go to the dark forest because of her, but he insists that he will help her no matter what. eventually, they agreed that flaretail would observe the cats in the clans to figure out where the weak points in each clan would be, and redfoot would take the blame for it all, as she was already in the dark forest.
flaretail’s clan suspects nothing, even comforting him as he feels ‘bad’ about being cursed with tragedy. eventually this causes flaretail to realize that the biggest tragedy he can cause his clan now, was to be the one to die himself, and thus he does, ending up in starclan (they believed his dark intentions were nothing more than hollow, as he never acted out on them and seemed devestated by his loss). from there, redfoot and flaretail had more nefarious plans in mind for the clans.
tl;dr: redfoot accidentally kills the riverclan medicine cat, is exiled for it, and eventually forced to suffer a cruel death when the cats of the clans still blame her for it. her brother, flaretail, grows hateful of all the clans and works together with his dark forest sister to cause the clans tragedies, without them figuring out why or how to stop them, which eventually leads to him having to die to cause his clan suffering, and him ending up in starclan just adds more possibilities to do horrible things to the cats of the clans.
