seollal this year is kinda the same as last year for stevie. there’s just one jarring thing different– his mom brings minkyu. a long time coming she had commented to stevie the morning before they headed out to his grandparents. he doesn’t quite know how he feels about it, but it makes him a lot more subdued than usual. 

he tries to think about it further– what it means. why he feels like that. it’s pretty obvious when he lays it all out in front of him– setting minkyu a place in the family makes him a more permanent fixture. he knows he doesn’t hate it but he certainly…doesn’t like thinking about it. he’ll tack that one later.

but everyone’s in better spirits this year. stevie himself, beaming happily at his grandparents when they greet him. he whisked away for the better part of the day with them, and he’s okay with that. it makes him focus on the now rather than the what ifs to things. they make wishes and hope and pray for upcoming change to the new year. stevie wouldn’t mind a little change– always good, but at least something. 

he makes wishes for his dad, but he doesn’t put too much hope on it. focuses on what’s most important– himself. attempting to, rather. stevie will try– so he makes a wish for himself– give me something exciting. or a chance to surf again. that’d be cool too.

the words caught yena off-guard, blinking in disbelief at junhee, mouth opening and immediately shutting again as she realized she had no clue what to say. the younger had a habit of that, coming out of nowhere with these genuine, heartfelt sentiments that yena never quite knew what to do with. it felt... wrong to some degree, to have junhee think so highly of her. she'd never done anything particularly deserving of his affection and admiration. she was with junhee as she was with most people, loud, superficial, conceited, kinda annoying. and yet he seemed to hold her in such high regard, it was offputting almost.

the silence lingered on for another few seconds until it hung tensely in the air, the only thing prompting yena to speak being the acute awareness of how awkward the atmosphere had gotten. "of course i know that silly." forced laughter falling from her lips, nudging junhee's shoulder with her own as she tried to desperately to cover up her own bewilderment. "you worry too much, you know that?" textbook evasion, step one, turning the conversation on him. "i'm a big girl. i can take care of myself. i have better things to do than to sit around feeling bad for myself." throwing one of her legs over his thighs, sitting herself down onto his lap, arms clasping behind his neck. step two, distraction. "if you worry so much about me, kiss it better maybe?"

he couldn't stand the thought of her going around, playing around with random ass strangers, endangering herself and her dignity. he had known her since the age of 10, had been always some kind of brother figure to her. dohwan knew that she didn't understood why he was so hung up on her, despite her brattiness and their present relationship was hard to define. the thing she wasn't aware of was the moment what had triggered his protectiveness, formed an unbreakable bond. and he was planning to never reveal it to her at all. a single smile, when he had first helped her up and carried her on his back, had been enough to shake his entire personality.

dohwan was still mourning after that memory, after the picture, maybe because if he were to forget, he would be dropping the part of him that was still carrying a human heart. eunmi wasn't the same anymore and he had changed as well, but it still made him wonder what would have happened to them if thing went differently.

"i just think that it would fit you better." he says, shrugging his shoulders, as he tugs on the tie around his neck. it was rare for him to participate in those kind of events, but he supposed that he could as well keep an eye on eunmi who was all too familiar with that kind of stuff. "it would make me worry less."
