➜ VLIVE PROMPT 002 ┆ PARK ISEUL ✧・゚ NEW YEAR NEW EXPERIENCES
... ISEUL learns ENGLISH
“hi, i’m park iseul, and i’m going to take you along with me on my journey to learning english!” he says brightly to the camera set up in front of him. “right now, all i know in english is your basic ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ pretty much, maybe some words here and there, but it’s really very negligible. so, i’ll update you every month on my progress, so you can see me get better!”
he shifts where he sits on the carpeted floor of his favourite little individual practise room. when the theme was announced he knew exactly what he wanted to do - learn english. it was something he’d been meaning to do for ages, but had kept putting it off or forgetting. now, he had an excuse to have to do it.
“i wanted to learn english because hopefully if- when i debut, i’ll have some international fans, and i know that there’s a load of languages out there, but i can’t really learn to speak them all, so since a lot of people speak english, i thought i’d learn it so i can better communicate with more fans in the future!” he laughs softly, slouching a tiny bit as he smiles at the camera, “i really hope it comes in useful!”
the vlive cuts to a clip a month later, iseul’s hair a little longer now, but his smile just as bright.
“so, it’s been a month since i started my english lessons, and i wanted to show you what i’ve learnt!” he lifts his work book up in front of him to show his pages filled with notes in rather scruffy handwriting. “sorry about my handwriting - it’s usually a lot nicer when i’m writing korean. i’m still not used to writing the english letters yet, so my hand writing is pretty ugly.” he laughs bashfully, a little embarrassed at his ugly writing. “i’ll say some things i’ve learnt for you, shall i?”
“my names park iseul. i’m twenty years old. i’m korean. i live in seoul. i have a mum and dad. i have no siblings.”
he bites his lip, looking upwards as he thinks, then he sighs, pouting. “i thought i knew more than that, but i guess not.” with a light laugh, he shrugs, then flips through his workbook a little, before looking back at the camera. “well, i’ll check in next month, hopefully i’ll have more to say then!”
the vlive once again cuts to another clip, iseul’s hair shorter than the first clip this time.
“month two done! i know a bit more now, let me show you!” he clears his throat and straightens his back before speaking.
“i’m park iseul, i’m twenty. today it’s windy. i like all season, but don’t like being too hot. i also like food. i like ramen most! on valentines day i didn’t get chocolates, but on white day i will give fans chocolates!”
he’s lying about not getting any chocolates, but he thinks it’s better to not let fans know anyone other than them like him, so they don’t worry about competition. his english, though better now, is still pretty basic - but he’s working on it!.
the next clip few clips are short and dotted throughout march, showing him learning new words, or searching things up and getting the pronunciation completely wrong, realising he got it wrong, then laughing about it for a while, until it comes to the last clip.
“so, it’s the end of the trimester, and i’ve learnt quite a lot, i think my pronunciation is better, but i think i still need to work on it more. i’ll show you what i know now, for the end of my learning english vlive!” he sets his workbook out of sight, so they know he’s not reading it out, then smiles at the camera confidently.
“hi, my names park iseul, i’m twenty years old, and i’m a trainee at legacy. i’ve been a trainee for three years and three months now, and i want to be an idol. today, it’s sunny, but it’s also a bit cold. i forgot to have breakfast today, but i snacked a bit too much. i’m feeling happy, but a bit tired. thank you for following me in my english journey!”
the ending part had been the hardest to learn, since it wasn’t a usual sentence you’d find in the basics textbook he had, but he’d used the internet and some online books and videos about grammar to get it perfect. with that, he beams at the camera, “thanks for watching my vlive, and i hope to show you a lot more improvement in the future. bye bye!”
