If you’ve listened to any CBS-affiliated all-news station, chances are you’ve heard a program at the top of the hour twice a day by the name of “The CBS World News Roundup”. 

The CBS World News Roundup is the oldest national radio news program still on the air today. It has been on the air since 1938. 

Originally, as the name suggests, the program was meant to focus on world news. However, over the years, this has changed quite a bit. It now merely mimics the regular top of the hour news updates heard every hour . However, the weekend edition of the roundup is an hour-long program (with commercials, it is only 40 minutes) focusing on reporting and discussing the previous week's news. 

Many affiliates only air a small part of the roundup due to time constraints and emphasis on local programming on the part of the affiliate. 

In order to cover more national news, many stations also air an audio simulcast of many CBS News television programs, such as the CBS Evening News on week nights (although many affiliates choose to just air the first 10 minutes. WCBS 880 in New York is one of them that do this.) and CBS Face the Nation on Sunday mornings. 

Ironically, the CBS World News Roundup is syndicated by Westwood One, owned and operated by competitor media company Cumulus Media. 

Upon listening to many CBS News Radio affiliates, I like what I hear, although I do wish they would focus on more world news as the name "CBS World News Roundup" suggests. Radio today is too focused on time and not focused enough on the public service that is news.

1010 WINS vs. WCBS 880: Is there a difference?

The short answer: yes. Since 880 and 1010 WINS are both in the same market and belong to the same corporation, CBS Radio, they have to do whatever they can to differentiate themselves. Here's what I'v observed:

WCBS allows more time for conversation between the news anchors while 1010 WINS is more structured 

WCBS 880 is geared more toward the suburbs while 1010 WINS focuses more on the city

WCBS 880 typically has two news anchors anchoring coverage at one time while 1010 WINS only has one. 

1010 WINS switches anchors every hour and half hour while WCBS 880 has anchor shifts of more than 3 or 4 hours.

WCBS 880 has more time for featurettes such as those hosted by Charles Osgood, while 1010 WINS is more structured. 

WCBS 880 is affiliated with the CBS Radio Network, as it airs top of the hour CBS World News Roundup, the longest running radio news report. It also airs top of the hour national news updates from the CBS Broadcast Center, home of CBS News. They also air the audio simulcast of the first 10 minutes or so of the CBS Evening News due to their affiliation with CBS News Radio. 1010 WINS is not affiliated with the CBS Radio Network, even though it is owned by CBS Radio Inc. Rather, it is loosely affiliated with ABC News Radio, part of rival network Cumulus Media Inc.

Finally, they both have distinctly different sounds.

As you can see, both stations, even though owned by the same firm. serve their own distinctive purposes. 

Personally, I listen to both stations frequently because I am a self-proclaimed news junkie and I know people who are on the air on both stations. I am good friends with the morning anchor on 1010 WINS, Lee Harris. My mentor, Bernie Wagenblast, is weekend traffic reporter on 1010 WINS and the voice of the NYC Subways. I am also friends with Steve Scott, well-known news anchor on WCBS 880.
