john didn’t even bother hiding the fact that he was looking through their old wedding album. it brought him back to happier times, and as it was coming onto the eve of mary’s death, it only seemed right to go through memory lane. but this time, he wasn’t as sad as he’d been before. instead, he just thought to himself how lucky he had been to meet a woman like mary, and how thankful he was to have her in his life. “ have you looked at this yet ?? ” he asked rosie, as she walked into the living room. “ it was back in the day when i was younger and more attractive of course. ”

     “Am I doing this Snapchat thing right?” She’s glancing at her daughter almost helplessly. She knows very well how to use the app, but knows her daughter actually likes to show people how to do things.

As she stood in front of the building in London – the same old London, the same old place she’d once shared with her husband and baby daughter – Mary felt like she could barely catch her breath, barely even remember her own name. It was Mary Watson again. She was finally back here, ready to face the music and explain to her husband where she’d been, what she’d been doing, why she’d gone in the first place. She was ready to be Mary Watson again, and live the only life that mattered – the one where she had her husband and daughter by her side again. If they would have her. She swallowed, forcing down the fear of being turned away and hated as she marched up to the front door. Taking a steeling breath, she knocked on the front door of the only place that had ever really felt like home.

     sherlock’s words are clipped. he found the small photo album in a box of her things, something neither he nor john had ever been able to throw away. another death on a case had led him to the box; sometimes he needed to remember that he wasn’t invincible. the album landed with a thud on the table in front of rosie. sherlock kept his eyes away from it. mary had never been a particularly sentimental person, but the album contained what few pictures she did keep. john had his own copy.

          “ i was thinking takeout for dinner. i can’t cook, and if your dad is working -- is he? i assume that’s why you’re here -- takeout will have to do. anything in mind? ”

      change the subject, sherlock. act like nothing happened and maybe everything will be okay. for a moment, his eyes squeezed shut and he shook his head; guilt was such a funny emotion.
