She had a feeling that her father's wife wasn't her true mother, she never treated her the same as her siblings. She went snooping through her father's files one day to see if her suspicions were valid. When he caught her in the act, she demanded to know the truth. After some fighting, he finally confessed. But he did not name her mother due to some secrets that she could not scrape away.

Kenna is wide-eyed and sweet. She is very ladylike, everything a lady of her "station" should be. It was quite convenient that she turned out this way. It would certainly be difficult for her to find a husband of noble status if she had a rebellious spirit. Her fathers family crafted that illusion very well, not even Kenna is aware of their plan to craft her into the perfect lady.

her debut season had proved to be unsuccessful. a few suitors here and there, but no serious matches—and none good enough for her mother.

it's only many moons later—after an embarrassing amount has passed since her debut—that she meets her match. almost at majority age, she had dreaded having to settle for a safe choice that she knew would only disappoint her parents. then came along biagio auditore.

there’s not much to say about soraya’s background.  mother and father joined in a mutually beneficial marriage and while there was never true love between them, there was respect and perhaps most importantly, there was MONEY. the davani’s have never been very active in social circles, usually preferring for everyone to associate them with their abundant wealth rather than their personality or achievements.

there’s nothing a stupid amount of coin can't fix — that's the attitude they implemented on their children, with the youngest of the two armin, being the most receptive to it.  soraya on the other hand, always knew the importance of participating in such events. being rich is nice and all, but having allies matters just as much. 

soraya was born five minutes before her brother armin was. it’s not a big difference but it was clear that she was the older of the two by how she always seemed to follow closely behind her younger sibling‘s trail of destruction, patching up whatever she could along the way. 

an ongoing joke between the family was that soraya was brought to this world to clean up after armin’s messes. a joke that absolutely infuriated her, mind you. she hated how it always feel onto her to get armin out of every spat and scandal he found himself or risk their family's reputation.

it was no secret among noble society that soraya was much better suited to be the head of the household. she was the older one, the one who handled all the finances, the one who knew how to navigate through social circles. but alas, customs are customs and it didn’t matter how intelligent or how talented soraya was – she wasn’t a man and therefore could never be the head of the family. until…

the night before armin’s disappearance it is reported that he had approached his sister to beg for her assistance on a grave matter, one that seemed to have him on edge, but soraya had refused to help him. the result was a nasty argument between the two siblings before armin stormed out of the house.  that was a couple of months ago and armin has yet to show up again.

nobody is uncouth enough to say it outright, but it is awfully convenient that armin’s disappearance means that soraya is now the sole heir of her family’s fortune. so did she have a hand in his disappearance? maybe, but not a direct one. soraya has no idea what actually happened to her brother, just that he had gotten mixed with some unsavory sorts.

to noble society, soraya is nothing sort of enchanting. an intelligent girl, easy to get along with and even easier to pity after the poor tragedy her family is going through.

a master at making people feel good. knows when to stroke an ego and when to uplift an insecurity.

now, her heart still aches for her boys. every fibre of her being is tainted with grief, missing them both dearly despite having long completed their journey to the pearly gates. but pen has no intention of losing herself in her grief, knowing she has a young daughter to take care of. she will not make the mistake of letting go again. to support her and her daughter, pen works at fortnum and mason.

its not often that someone grows up and chooses to become a mercenary. that line of work tends to come from having no other option at all and for alonzo that was very much the case. his mother was a sex worker, father was absent. that didn’t leave alonzo or his siblings with many options for their future. 

he wasn’t smart enough to become a scholar, wasn’t noble enough to become a soldier, wasn’t talented enough to become a creative. the one thing that alonzo was good at… was fighting. 

taught himself, actually. from fists to sticks to actual blades. that’s the thing about not having a fancy tutor – all the skills he gained came from real-life or death situations.

he and his brother were in their teens when they left home, off to find less-than-desirable ways to make money. that’s where his rumor comes in.

the water beat against the shoreline just outside of the window when nadir was born—tide high on that one late summer night. the third gulse child, welcomed by his father, mother, and the sea.

he was no older than four when his eldest sibling taught him how to swim, and he has yet to look back at the shore ever since then. the day he almost drowned was the day he fell in love with the violence of the ocean.

nadir grew strong and brutal—almost wild. it matters not that the gulses are members of antalya's high society, arda's merchant background and jale's military roots will not dictate nadir how he must behave. and who is there to stop him? he is but a third child, with an elder sister and brother to bear the brunt of responsibilities while he spent his days swimming and sailing, seabound and shipbound.

on his 14th birthday his father gifted him a boat. it was small, no bigger than a fisherman's boat, but it was his pride and joy. until the day he was granted his ship. he called it the iron kiss and named himself captain. it was his many voyages across the ottoman empire and beyond that filled most of his days.

it's one day not long after his 25th birthday that his parents received a letter. from an aunt, and uncle, and cousins nadir have never met. they're in england, he knows. his father's younger sister, who married another wealthy merchant seeking to grow his business on foreign lands. my dearest brother, the letter read. send your children to england.

and so arda had. nadir was tasked to take his siblings on the iron kiss, to bring them safely to the shores of england. they were to meet his aunt in a quaint town called brighton.

it was the preparations for the social season that awaited them there. his aunt and uncle were so sure that the gulse siblings would find opportunities in the capitol city of london. riches and maybe even love, they said. the mysterious new arrivals would surely do wonders for nadir's own cousins.

so nadir docked his ship. he let himself be led by his aunt and uncle all the way to london, already dreaming of the season's end. but for now, without the ocean at his window— what better way can he entertain himself than to bare his teeth and play with fire?

jung was primarily raised by his mom and his sisters. he is a mama's boy through and through. he takes up the skills she recommends, handles the estate duties she tells him to, and she is always the one he turns to when he needs advice

pretty much the only thing his mother hasn't decided for him is who he courts. she wants him to marry for love or something. he wants to just vibe :/

he has five sisters - three older, two younger. all three of his older sisters are married and out of the house. he misses them a lot, and he frequently visits them at their new homes. he REALLY likes being an uncle. he sort of wishes it was his job full time

his second youngest sister is 19. she and jung are very close, and she has recently admitted to him that she is.... not interested in men. at all. in fact, she finds them mostly very gross and smelly. she confirmed something that jung has always suspected, that she is primarily interested in women

she will debut in a few years, but she probably won't ever marry. as such, jung knows he will probably have to support her for her whole life. he's secretly grateful for this, because it means things can stay the way they are, and she won't leave him to build a new family like their older sisters

he should probably get married. he knows that, he knows that he is the only son in his family, that if he wants to continue their family line, he needs to produce an heir. there are two things holding him back: he's a little scared of falling in love and he's a LOT scared of being a father

his father is a drunk and physically abusive one. he hit jung until jung started hitting back, and he used to hit jung's mother until jung started intervening. he has affairs, he has certainly sired illegitimate children, and he had a serious gambling problem before his mother cracked down on it, determined not to let him squander away jung and his sisters' inheritance

apart from the gambling, all of this is completely unbeknownst to most of the ton. in fact - to outsiders, jung's father is a gregarious, even tempered man with a funny and warm countenance. to preserve the family name and ward off any potential scandal, his mother has instructed jung and his sisters to keep it that way

he attended oxford for a college degree, which was followed by a tour of east asia, accompanied by one of his father's upper-crust childhood friends. he thought it was gonna be a party time but in reality it was mostly getting made fun of for his subpar korean by this old guy and getting called a male trollop whenever he made eyes at the ladies

obviously undiagnosed, but jung is dyslexic. he slogged through university and he does Not crack open books for fun. only when he's being forced. or when he can convince a pretty person to read aloud to him : )

this has of course contributed to him being a bit academically challenged, but he probably would've been even when he wasn't dyslexic, because he finds it all extremely tedious

but he's not entirely incompetent! he is a skilled boxer, fencer, and hunter. any physical skill he puts his mind to, he can master. his only problem is that he gets bored too quickly. he's always on the hunt for a challenge or a thrill, wherever he can find it
