Rocket Raccoon (WHAT!?)
Groot first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics' Tales to Astonish #13. In the story "I Challenged… Groot! The Monster from Planet X!" by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, he was very different from the Groot we all know and love now. That issue hit the racks on June 27, 1960.
At the end of GOTG Vol 3, we finally understand Groot and what he’s saying – Gunn confirmed that Groot was literally saying “I am Groot” in the goodbye scene – but because we’ve spent so much time with him, we understood what he was really saying -- “I love you guys."
Which makes me wonder in GOTG Vol 1, did Groot actually say “We are Groot” or did we and the Guardians (minus Rocket) only understand a part of what he was saying, because we still hadn’t spent that much time with him?
Personally, I really like that idea and it’s now my headcanon.
The only question that remains for me – is what was Groot saying in that moment?
We are a family.
or
We are the Guardians.
or
We are friends.
The last one is extra devastating, considering Rocket would fully understand Groot, so he’s not only losing his closest friend of the last few years, but he’s also being reminded of when he last lost his friends as Lylla was saying “it’s good to have friends,” when the High Evolutionary killed her, which was soon followed by the murders of Teefs and Floor.
So, that’s all kinds of extra heartbreaking.
🌟 Happy National High Five Day! 🌟

I can't even explain how much I loved Vol 3. I literally can't because I'm too occupied with crying over it.
