Maelora Targaryen has always lived in the shadow of her twin sister, Rhaenyra. With dark hair and no dragon, whispers circulate about how Targaryen the younger princess really is. When she is betrothed to Gwayne Hightower, Maelora is indignant; the pair cannot stand one another. Yet it will be in Oldtown, a city of fractured magic and ancient gods, where Maelora will discover herself. For Rhaenyra may be made of fire, but Maelora is built from blood.
“Princess.” Ormund inclined his head, hands clasped behind his back. “Does your condition trouble you?” “No more than it does any other woman, I would say.” Maelora sometimes hoped that rubbing her bump might soothe the child within, but the kicking was ceaseless. “It’s been some time since a Targaryen married into House Hightower.” Ormund mused, his fingers rising to toy with silver pomander strung around his neck. Maelora wondered how hard she would have to yank it to rip it off his neck. The thought appealed to her, for she had already decided she didn’t much like Ormund and whatever hidden agenda had caused him to dog her steps into the hallway. Maelora recalled the last time that a Targaryen had wed a Hightower, as she was absolutely certain Ormund did. Maegor the Cruel had taken Ceryse Hightower to wife, only to later discard her when their marriage bore no fruit. Maelora’s own marriage was not cursed the same, the evidence of success in the roundness of her belly.
