I got called into work today (I was supposed to be off, but a coworker was stuck in California without a flight home from her weekend trip) and usually I don’t mind too much, but today was really tough. After a gruellingly slow day, about nine customers came within the last five minutes of my shop’s opening hours, all wanting different drinks that involve different machines.

Dunno if you know this, reader, but I work as a barista in a not-Starbucks coffee shop here in town, and we make every drink by hand by traditional European standards. My supervisor had gone downstairs to grab the stuff the openers would need for their shift, and so I was left to close alone. Again, I don’t mind, but adding in a pile of customers (including one who spilled her entire fresh coffee on her feet in front of the register) that prevented me from even pre-closing the machines was a wreck. Finally, as I was about to put up the “Closed” sign, a lady and her friend walk in at exactly 10:59 and ordered some teas, which I have to brew loose-leaf. I told her we were closed, and so she checked her watch and corrected me by saying she had a minute left to order. I, completely exasperated, took her order and made the brew. She realised I had about seven other customers I was attempting to serve, and left me a $15.00 tip for her $4.00 teas.

After waking up early to finish typing out a statistical criticisms paper, designing and presenting a mini experimental mockup in my research methods course, and having a full day of work all on an empty stomach and 3 hours of sleep, I literally cried as she handed me the bills. I’ve never been tipped so much money by one person, and I felt awful for how annoyed I was when she walked in.

I guess what I want to say is that if you decide to go to a restaurant literally a minute before they close (please don’t, but if you do:) please, please leave a nice tip for your server. She was the only one out of the crowd who left me any money, and it made the almost 45 minutes of overtime I had to spend catching up cleaning feel worth it.
