"Y/N," what are you still doing here?" Greg asks, finding you still behind your desk, even though it's way past your working hours.

"Oh, I just need to finish something," you say.

"Who says that?"

"What?" you reply, taken aback by his question.

"Who says you need to finish this thing today?" he asks you, his voice sweet and soft like always.

The truth is no one told you that you have to finish all your tasks today. But you're pushing yourself to do it anyway.

Last week you made a mistake that Greg had to work extra to cover. You felt awful about it. The least you can do now is work harder.

"Y/N?" he says, noticing you got lost in your thoughts.

"Sorry. No one said that. I just...want to do it."

He sits down on the empty chair in front of your desk - that same desk that has three empty cups on it, previously filled with coffee. Greg notices.

"Y/N, that's a lot of coffee," he points out.

"Yeah, I know," you laugh, awkwardly. You turn your gaze down, suddenly embarassed to look into his eyes. It feels like he's reading you.

"Hey, look at me."

You do as he says, even though you hate it.

"You've been doing great, you know that right? I'm really lucky to have you," Greg says with a smile.

His words make your eyes light up, and you're sure he can tell.

"I don't want you to push yourself," he continues. "You've been doing more than enough. And...you're important to me. I'd hate to see you not taking care of yourself, especially because of work."

"I just hate disappointing you," you say with a frown.

"Is this about last week? Y/N, I told you it's okay."

"It's not, though," you whisper.

Greg stands up and moves closer to you. Before you know it, he's squatting down next to your chair so he can look properly into your eyes.

"We all make mistakes. What makes you think you're not allowed to?"

You don't really know what to say to that. He's not wrong.

Greg speaks again. "I'm more than satisfied with your work. I'd be lost here without you."

"Thank you," you say, flattered by his praise.

"No, thank you; for being here...for being you."

A moment passes where you don't speak. You're just looking at each other with sweet smiles. It makes you wonder if he's staring at you as something more than a boss looking at his assistant. You don't dwell on it, because you're sure it wiill make your heart beat so fast it'll burst out of your chest.
