run boy run. what are their motivations. what does davey want? what does jack want? do they know what they want? do they want anything or just want to get away? i think this story is so interesting because davey is trying so hard to avoid, but can he indulge? does he allow himself?
i rlly love you and this story so so much !!!

see with jack its a bit simpler. he wants davey to be happy. he wants davey to be himself. he wants davey. it doesn't need to be romantic - yes, jack loves davey, and in the RBRverse he's known that for some time, but he would be happy enough to just have davey in his life the way he is. that's where the fear and desperation comes in. because davey is slowly but surely becoming something that is not davey, but this creaking automaton that wears daveys face, welded at the joints with the jaw wired shut, not living, just existing. and jack is trying so, so, so hard to get davey back, to the point that it almost feels selfish. because davey may not be himself, but he's (at the very least) something when he's around florence - obviously we as the readers know that this is because florence is able to give davey solidarity and neurodivergent connection, not romance, but in jacks mind, maybe this is davey now, and jack is just holding him back. so he tries not to interfere too much, and he tries to say the right thing, and davey is becoming more and more miserable and jack doesn't know what to do except grab on to the thing he wants and say 'please please please i'll do anything'. jack is the one to seize what he wants without thinking of the consequences, because he can deal with consequences later, he needs davey to be davey again NOW. and then. yknow. kiss scene.
davey is a little more difficult. because he doesn't really want anything, and that's his problem. he wants to do the right thing. he wants to do right by others. he wants his father to get better and he wants his mother to smile and he wants sarah to be able to relax and he wants les to remember his childhood fondly - because davey knows how to want things for others, but he doesnt really know how to want for himself. he wants to go to school and be a lawyer... so that he can bring money and security to his family and to people who need it. he doesn't really see himself as one of those people, though. that's why all of this - girls, jack, school, everything - is causing him so much grief. because there is something there that he does want. something with a red hue and a familiar shape. but davey cant afford to really focus on what that vague, nebulous thing is because what if its wrong? and what if when he sees it for what it is, he cant go back?
jack wants davey. davey wants to want something, but only in the 'correct' way. jack tries to show davey how wanted he is, and in doing so, he inadvertently forces davey to realize that his wants will always be wrong.
