Happy Summer Solstice! It's officially summer even though it fells like it's been here for a while already. I hope this is a good summer for everyone to get outdoors and enjoy nature. It's been a pretty hectic and rainy spring but maybe summer will be better. I just happened to catch this hot air balloon passing by from my back porch. The Foothills Trail is nationally recognized, challenging, and fun. It weaves back and forth along the borders of NC, SC, and GA. If you get a chance to hike even a little of it you should. So I feel like I have a tendency to check out waterfalls in groups of three and Panthertown Valley is a wonderful example of which. Granny Burrell Falls here made a nice little loop through the West end of the valley passing Wilderness Falls and Frolictown Falls in the process. I can't hardly believe that someone used to live above the falls here a hundred years ago, that's where the name comes from. Just a little insight on some of my plans for the year: I joined the Carolina Mountain Club in an effort to get involved more with the hiking community in the area and to try to do what I can to protect the wonderful natural resources we have in North Carolina and beyond. One neat thing the CMC has is various hiking challenges to test people in different ways and to highlight certain areas worth seeing in person. I'm attempting 3 of these challenges at once. One of them is visiting 100 specific waterfalls in NC, except for a few in SC and TN. I've reached over 35 so far, mainly from my hiking last year, but I hope to visit the other 60-some by the end of the year. This waterfall is Long Branch Falls, also just a short drive from the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and a fairly easy hike down an old logging road.
