he can’t remember what he was doing, or what time of the day it was, he can’t even remember who it was that had asked the question. all he remembers was how those words, casual and probably meaningless, echoed in his mind.
“which do y'all reckon is worse — if someone stops liking you after some time, or never actually liked you to begin with?”
the antares guys scrambled to argue their stance, talking over each other, their voices growing louder than it should be in the library. then again, when have they ever been concerned with library etiquette?
the same question echoes in yikyung's mind every time he catches a glimpse of their buried chat history, or her lithe frame disappearing into the crowd without even a glance in his direction. did she pretend to not have seen him or was he really so forgettable? he finds it hard to believe the latter, and this darn ego of his is probably why he's taking it a little harder than he should, for someone who likes to brag about all the options he has.
sure, his pride is hurt. (but at least his feelings aren't... right?) it's not like he spends his time wondering why she stopped returning his messages, or why she forgot about how they said they were going to get his cat a new scratching post. (thanks to her disappearing act, lion still hasn't gotten a proper scratch and is about to destroy all the furniture in his dorm room.)
for someone who has done his fair share of ghosting, yikyung knows how to take a hint. if you still haven't heard from them in a week, and even that is stretching it a little, you can go ahead and wipe their contact from your phone. so it's not like he was waiting around for her reply, he has just been busy settling into his new part-time job.
sometimes, it gets so busy at the restaurant that he forgets about her. that is, until he gets back to his room and sees all the new scratch marks on his furniture, or turns on the radio past midnight and hears her voice, strangely distant now that he's only hearing it through electromagnetic waves. (coming to think of it, she might've always been a little distant from the start.)
he's getting on fine, doesn't even think about her these days. he even decided to order a scratching post online. (waited around for a bit just in case she decided to come back and well, he got the hint.) he probably can't even remember her last name now. (not a feat, he's generally bad with names.)
when yikyung showed up for his shift today, he wasn't expecting to get reminded of everything, starting from her last name, printed on the receipt of her order. right, go sohee. funny, she didn't seem to enjoy eating out much when they were seeing each other. maybe he wouldn't have developed that little crush on her if they hadn't spent all that time alone in his room ordering takeout.
he would peek outside the kitchen to see if she was on a date but he noticed the order was for one portion and stifled a sigh of relief. not that he cares, really; it's a pride thing, really. he doesn't even look up at her order and started preparing it right away. at the rate they were ordering takeout, he didn't need to be in love with her to know her order by heart.
getting her order right wasn't a problem for him. the challenge is getting this plate of boneless chicken to her without the awkward "oh, it's you". she has no clue that he started a part-time job so he can imagine the look on her face if she were to see him in this apron. unfortunately, it was a slow weekday night and he was the only part-timer on shift.
"you didn't specify what sauce you wanted so i told them half and half." he sets her plate down before her, placing a fork and a pair of plastic gloves right next to it. he didn't know which she preferred, he just knew that she didn't like getting her hands dirty. "enjoy your meal."
