SureFire Field Notes is a multi-segment informational video series with tips and techniques from subject matter experts of all backgrounds. In this episode, ...
A video on modern techniques dealing with weapons in the clinch. Interesting to see the similarities between (historical) wrestling such as controling the opponents center mass, trying to control their weapon arm etc. just as much as their are certain differences. For example the downward angle to shoot in when in a clinch to avoid hitting ones own arm used to control the opponent. If anyone recalls an example of such a thing in historical manuscripts do feel free to correct me. The only mentions of firearms in the treatises we deal with in HEMA don’t seem to assume any clinch work with them involved as actual firearms, and when they do pop up in one or two occasions it’s assumed that it’s you drawing it and firing as soon as you can if the need arises. From Micheal Hundts work Ein new Kůnstliches Fechtbuch im Rappier ("A New Art-Filled Fencing Manual on Rapier") :
“ 100. It sometimes helps wonderfully, when brisk people come together, whether Noble or non Noble, and are there to fight with hatred, how also today the weapons in the brawling are not equal, and may soon reduce one to the other in thrusting and in cutting, how it is now the custom in several Lands, which is also heard, where one has a dagger and rappier and the other has a short barreled weapon and rappier, and rather, when one is forced to use rappier and dagger, and he has learned nothing of it: So your grace, instead of the Dagger, take a short barreled weapon, and there it will be well revealed, what is the best thing to do, or not, Where dissimilar weapons before the opponent will be used, then in the case of emergency must one use, what one can think of, because it is all come to the utmost, now in these dangerous times in the World. So your grace, take good heed of these Stücke of mine, so they include together with the Steps and Circles, wellbeing, that each one is good against his enemy, and thereby, Your Grace can, with Honor and goodness, protect your Life and Limb. “

Keep calm and carry. But be sure you practice effective use and weapon retention. Make sure the weapon is legal where you work and live.
Beware Bad Advice: Carry a defensive weapon if you want to. But make sure you know how to use it. And learn weapon retention, too.
Why Professionals and Military Specialists Rely on Weapon Retention Systems
In professional and military environments, weapon control is not optional—it is foundational. Whether operating in protective roles, training environments, or active field conditions, maintaining secure control of a weapon while preserving mobility is critical to both safety and effectiveness.
Weapon retention systems exist to solve a real-world problem: how to keep a weapon secure, stable, and immediately accessible during movement, transitions, and high-stress situations. For professionals and military specialists, this balance can be the difference between efficiency and unnecessary risk.
Built for Movement, Not Static Carry
Unlike range or administrative carry, professional and military use involves constant movement—walking, kneeling, climbing, transitioning between tasks, and operating in confined or unpredictable spaces. Traditional slings can allow excessive swing or require constant adjustment, increasing fatigue and distraction.
A body-mounted retention system keeps the weapon close to the body’s center of mass. This reduces unwanted motion, limits snag hazards, and allows the operator to move naturally without losing control of their weapon.
Retention That Enhances Safety
One of the primary benefits of a retention system is safety during transitions. Many weapon-related incidents occur when operators are climbing, entering vehicles, assisting others, or shifting focus between tasks. A retention system keeps the weapon secured to the body, reducing the risk of drops, uncontrolled movement, or unsafe placement.
For military specialists and professionals, consistent weapon positioning also supports better muzzle awareness and reduces unnecessary handling—both critical elements of responsible weapon use.
Immediate Access When Seconds Matter
Retention does not mean restriction. Professional-grade retention systems are designed to keep the weapon accessible without delay. When engagement or response is required, the weapon can be brought into action quickly without removing gear or disengaging complex mechanisms.
This balance—secure retention combined with immediate access—is what makes retention systems valuable across operational roles, from protective services to field operations.
Reduced Fatigue, Increased Endurance
Extended operations demand equipment that works with the body, not against it. By distributing weight more naturally and eliminating the need to constantly hold or stabilize a weapon, retention systems help reduce fatigue over long periods.
Less fatigue means better focus, improved situational awareness, and safer decision-making—qualities essential for professionals operating in demanding environments.
A Practical Tool for Real-World Use
Weapon retention systems are not about appearances or trends. They are tools designed to support control, safety, and readiness. For military specialists and professional operators, retention systems provide a reliable way to maintain weapon security while staying mobile, focused, and prepared.
In environments where responsibility and performance are non-negotiable, secure weapon retention is not an accessory—it’s a necessity.

Hands-Free, Ready, and Responsible: Weapon Retention Safety While Hunting
Safe firearm handling is essential during every hunt—especially while moving through uneven terrain, climbing into tree stands, or crossing obstacles. A reliable weapon retention system helps hunters maintain control of their firearm while keeping both hands free for balance, gear, and navigation.
The Triangle Weapon Retention System is designed for hands-free, weapon-ready carry during hunting. It secures the firearm close to the body, reducing swing, snagging, and the risk of accidental drops. By keeping the weapon stable and properly positioned, hunters can move confidently while maintaining safe muzzle control.
Weapon retention systems are especially valuable during high-risk transition moments, such as climbing, kneeling, or adjusting equipment. Instead of setting a firearm down or relying on a loose sling, the firearm remains consistently secured and accessible.
In addition to improving safety, hands-free firearm retention reduces fatigue and improves balance during long hunts. The result is greater focus, better situational awareness, and a safer hunting experience overall.
For hunters who prioritize firearm safety, mobility, and immediate readiness, the Triangle Weapon Retention System offers a practical solution built for real-world use in the field.
