My hope is that even with his arm back, he’ll struggle with the same depression, and maybe we’ll get something on mental illness???? But that might be too much to hope for I dunno. : I’m tryin not to get too bothered until I see what’s next.

yeeeahh but i mean, physical disabilities are SO SO rare for protagonists. like the only other one right now is Hiccup from HTTYD and thats pretty recent so like...i thought we were gettin somewhere?? and its so common for physically disabled characters to get 'magically healed' or w/e like..i just didnt want that for adventure time. its frustrating and disappointing and i mean if you were a little kid and an amputee watching that i think it would probably not make you feel super great. like i bet a lot of kids could see themselves in finn when he lost his arm and then the adventure time crew just shit all over them EDIT: ALSO its such a cheap fucking shitty trope to have a character temporarily deal with a disability just for the drama and then cure them after its had its 15 mins of "OMG WHATS CHARACTER X GONNA DO NOW??". like literally its nasty and ableist and i think its important that we dont sweep it under the rug even IF they do anything about mental illness later in the series. mental illness and physical disabilities are connected but different issues and it seems like its really common for ppl to derail conversations specifically about physical disability to talk about mental illness instead.

Today I got my creative writing portfolio back from my professor; written on it in red pen were a 4.0 and the comment that it was one of the best he's received in the decade. Which is nice because I've never shared much of my writing. And I've never been so anxious about an assignment. But beneath his praise: Don't waste your time writing fantasy; start reading books that matter. I'm not really sure how I feel about that yet. What do you think? =\

First off, congratulations on the excellent portfolio!  =)

Secondly, though, I think your professor is full of shit.  By his message I’m assuming he wants you to focus more on nonfiction than on fantasy, apparently because — in his mind — nonfiction is important and fantasy isn’t.

Let’s think about fantasy for a minute, okay?  And by fantasy I mean Harry Potter.

Sure, the HP books were full of wizards and wands and Whomping Willows, butterbeer and unicorns and dragons and dark lords:  magical books, magical schools, magical maps, magical people.  Magic, period.  But do you know what else the HP books were full of?  Friendships.  Accomplishments.  Loneliness.  Broken families.  Betrayals.  Promises.  Praise.  Bad parents and good parents and foster parents and good brothers and bad brothers and foster brothers, and strong girls, strong women.  Empowerment.  Change.

Fantasy is never just fantasy.  Where there’s a sword there’s honor, or a lack of it:  where there’s a shield there’s a sacrifice, or cowardice, or bravery.  Fear.  There are lessons to be learned from the people in fantastic stories, examples to follow:  how many kids do you think read about Neville Longbottom or Luna Lovegood and felt kinship, felt understanding, felt strength?

Nonfiction’s great.  History inspires.  But fantasy’s candle is just as bright, just as blazing, just as much of a light in dark places.  It’s a shame someone told you to snuff it out.
