weatheredhands - A Warm Life In The Cold (12”, Transparent Red)
Best of 2014 - Alex
Spotify Playlist of Alex's Best Of 2014
1) Modern Baseball – You’re Gonna Miss It All
There was no real competition for the top spot on this list. This album went straightto the top of my most played almost as soon as it was released, thanks to the fact that it was on repeat for a solid month. Not tomention that every song sounded great both times I saw them live in2014. I’m not one for ratings but this album is a solid 10/10.
Listen to: 'Your Graduation'
2) Gnarwolves – Chronicles Of Gnarnia Gnarwolves released their debut album this year which is great, but not great enough for my list. The compilation of their three EP’s is a different story, it’s so intense, something that I feel was lost slightly in their self titled. It’s been a huge year for them and this album is to thank for that.
Listen to: 'Community, Stability, Identity'
3) Weathered Hands – A Warm Life In The Cold A really really great album. Another album that I stuck on repeat for a large amount of the year. This album was set for second place until I realised I could squeeze Gnarwolves in, but that does not take away from the standard of this record. For me, it is one of those albums that has a song for every mood, which can never be a bad thing. I’m really excited to see what plans they have in the new year.
Listen to: 'Riviera'
4) Seahaven – Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism Only This album didn’t grab me straight away, as I don’t think it did for most people. There was a noticeable change from their previous release but they’ve really made it work. There is a very atmospheric feel that they’ve really managed to capture at their live shows. My advice to anyone who listens to this is to give it a little bit of time, then you’ll love it.
Listen to: 'Flesh' (or 'Solar Eclipse' if you’re feeling sad)
5) Moose Blood – I’ll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time There was a power struggle between Moose Blood and Architects for 5th place and Moose Blood have just edged it. It could be that, being a more recent release, it still has that buzz of a great new release, which it really is. When writing this I am yet to see this band live, but this album has really wet my appetite.
Listen to: 'Anyway'
Honourable Mentions: Architects – Lost Forever // Lost Together Yet another huge step up, with a side of moral values.
Listen to: 'Broken Cross'
Pianos Become The Teeth – Keep You A big change, that doesn’t sound like a big change.
Listen to: 'Lesions'
Code Orange – I Am King Press play and fist pump accordingly
Listen to: 'My World'
’68 – In Humour and Sadness Still bitter about not seeing these in December. Utter intensity.
Listen to: 'Track 8 O'
Paolo Nutini – Caustic Love An album that reminds me of one of the best parts of my year. What a great album should do.
Listen to: 'Iron Sky'
