This is a hypothetical but do you have any sense of what would happen if the Liberals lose their majority but remain the largest party after the federal election in the fall? Any precedents in recent history or the provinces that suggest they would work with the NDP, BQ, or Greens? (I don't know a ton about Canadian politics, sorry if this is a basic question)
That would be a minority government.
The government could continue to function if the Liberals got support and compromises on policy from the Conservatives, NDP, Greens, Bloc Quebecois, etc.
An example of this is the B.C. Government. They have been governing since 2017 with an NDP government supported by a few Green MLA’s (who as part of this agreement get somewhat of a say on some major government policies while the core of the government’s policies are NDP).
I would much rather have a Liberal Minority government with support from the NDP/Greens than a Liberal Majority. Some of Canada’s most important social gains were made during minority governments, and the MP’s from other parties could keep the Liberals accountable not allowing them to do whatever they want.
