Eurovision: You Decide on BBC2
The BBC held its annual selection for its Eurovision Song Contest entry.
"Bigger than us" was the winning song, performed in a gospel style by Michael Rice. There's a gospel effect to wow the juries, but the song needs a bit of work so Michael doesn't growl so much in the opening verse.
In the Songov system, there was a second version of the song. Holly Tandy gave the best vocals of the night, but didn't have the stage presence to claim the win.
"Freaks" was presented in a couple of interesting versions. Jordan Clarke made a spiky performance, with plenty to catch the eye, but it felt like a warm-up for a great ballad. Maid had their shot, lots of minor keys, but the minor keys turned into off key far too often.
"Sweet lies" had very different presentations. Kerri-Anne tried to replicate "Fuego" from last year, forgetting that "Fuego" only worked because it had a decent song and ran near the end. Anisa's grand piano crashed and burned.
The show was compromised by flags getting in the way of the camera shots, same procedure as every year. Mel Giedroyc and Måns Zelmerlöw presented with affection, same procedure as last year. And I spend the interval act looking at the recent history of boycotts against Eurovision contests.
