5 Reasons To Avoid Using "Flash" On Your Website
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Plain and simple. Even by overlooking the problems Flash has caused over the past years, business and web designers continue to base their creations in the Adobe program.
Maybe by marrying Flash and HTML you thought you bought yourself a one way ticket to heaven. Well, no. Not really. You're diving straight into SEO hell. Suit yourself.
Why should I or my company avoid using the eye catching program? Well, here are some straight to the point reasons which we hope don't fall
Despite of the Internet access being available even in your shower (literally), there are still countless people who use the internet via dialup or other limited connections. Flash files, especially those using sounds, embedded movies or bitmap images, can be time dragging and frustrating. Sometimes you may not even see the movie and would click close on your navigation tab.
Flash is a creature that does not care if you don't have the time to look at 30 secs of intro, cause a heart attack by sudden changes of sound once you load the site or hallucinogen images jumping at your face. Flash could even get you fired if you're trying to sneak your way into looking a NSFW site from your small cubicle and suddenly enable sounds.
Since flash websites are all compiled into one big flash movie clip, there is no way to press the back button on your browser. This can get a bit confusing to your visitors since they are used to clicking the back button and it will take them out of your site. On the other hand, with html websites each page has their own separate link that is read by your browser and allows you to navigate easily through your site.
If you did the job yourself, you might be safe. Hiring someone who does the job and firing them down the road might face some serious troubles with other developers. Some programers code their project to prevent others from editing leaving you tied up to the original programmer's chair. You then would have to hire them over and over again as you need to do even the smallest modifications. True story.
Whether you admit or not that you are on the web to sell, Flash is the #1 enemy of SEO or Search Engine Optimization. What does this mean? It means that by having a fully flash site, the big boy Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing will not drag and read your index content and you won't be found. Remember, it is after all content embedded in a movie. It's not tangible to the "robots" per say.
Ok, enough is enough. What is Flash good for? Banners and ads, yes, that's it. You may want to try using HTML5 before thinking of Flash as an alternative to your good looking animations. Online games? Sure... Video Blogs? Sure... But if you want to get found - Flash is the omen.
