We be Trippin
On an oil rig, tripping is like paying for shipping. No one likes having to do it (sorry dad), but it's just part of the deal. We all know we should expect the shipping fee, but every time you reach the online checkout it's an unfortunate little surprise. "Fine then! If you're going to charge me $30 in shipping, I'll just go to the warehouse in California and pick it up myself!" #logic Tripping always seems to take more time than expected as well, and out here time is money (I've heard that before... maybe that's everywhere...). You get all geared up and excited to drill, and before you can start, its all "we will probably begin drilling in 10 hours once we've tripped to the bottom". oh yeah, I knew that was coming. bummer.
"Tripping" is where you do not hold the handrails correctly and slip down the stairs. (haha good jokes.) It is also what they call it when they move drill pipe in and out of already-drilled hole sections. For example, the rig I'm currently on finished drilling the vertical section of the well, then tripped out of the hole to change drill bits. Then we tripped back into the hole, and once the drill bit reaches the bottom, drilling commences. Each 30 foot piece of drill pipe needs to be disconnected and laid down. Those are big heavy (1000lb) pieces of drill pipe swinging around, and that's an operation you don't want to be rushing.
While we are tripping we can't make many changes to the mud- if it needs a little mixing here or there it has to wait until the fluid is circulating. That means while we are tripping I have a chance to catch up on ordering chemicals, getting inventory lined up, and preparing for the next section of the well. But when we trip for two days in a row its hard not to get impatient. This morning I went for a run, did laundry, did all the dishes, baked a Dutch apple pie and three dozen cookies. Classic oilfield.
I just made myself sound super productive. What else am I going to do out here in the desert, where my job for the day is to "be available"?
I don't know how many times I've typed "we be trippin" on my daily report, then deleted it to write something more professional sounding.
