New claims that Facebook censors conservative news offer a glimpse behind the curtain of just how much social media controls what we see about the world around us

Very interesting article on the censorship & content management of conservative content by social media companies (including our beloved Facebook). Personally, I don't believe it should be the objective of a social media site to manage what opinions are promoted via their sites/ apps. Really and truly, their purpose should be to MAKE SURE that all perspectives and viewpoints are shared and promoted EQUALLY. With that being said, social media companies are just that-- COMPANIES. They are headed & administrated by PEOPLE with obvious (and not so obvious) biases, be they political, cultural, or any other way people decided to separate themselves. So while the purpose of these organizations is seemingly egalitarian in nature, the system itself still lends itself to the biases of human nature. But to hear the that viewpoints of the employees of these information giants are being pushed to the masses so conspicuously behind the scenes is unnerving to say the least.Surprising? Definitely. Unexpected though? No, not really. Pulling from the article: "David Marcus, Facebook’s Vice President of Messaging recently told Wired: “Unlike email where there is no one safeguarding the quality and the quantity of the stuff you receive, we’re here in the middle to protect the quality and integrity of your messages and to ensure that you’re not going to get a lot of stuff you don’t want.”" Guess Facebook considers itself guardian of quality information. I'm wondering who gave them the authority to decide what's important to the world (oh yeah we did-- I am by using their tool to post this very message-- something to think about). I'd like to hear your thoughts friends.

I know a lot of organizations, especially non-profits, that don't know how to make correct decisions about online projects and products. It isn't merely about a social media strategy (a subject that has so much coverage nowadays). This is also about: who coordinates an online campaign? Who decides that there should even be an online campaign? Who decides how a new website is built, who is responsible for social media? Who monitors user behaviour and Google Analytics? Who optimizes such online products? Who is responsible for the correct information about an offline project? Is it the offline project leader or the webmanager? I can go on and on with these questions that a lot of organizations can't answer.

Managements usually don't know enough about web governance to set out procedures and assign responsibilities to the correct employees.

We've come to a point in history that most managements realize this is a problem that can hardly be solved 'bottom-up'. That's where web management comes in. It is a subject that hasn't gone mainstream yet, so I will try to post good articles and insights as often as I can.
