Story - summarized
At the Designer’s Tea Party, Qin Yi is talking with a reporter about the inspiration for his Crimson Phoenix design. He knows that she wants to know more about him, but he turns the questions around and tells her about the love story behind the dress.
Princess Luanyun was a snobby princess who wanted only the most original, inspired art. The books and music she had were of good quality, but from artists trying too hard. She wanted something authentic. Her maid suggested going to see a play by Qin Yi. Luanyun pretended to be reluctant, but she loved admiring the costumes.
As she and her maid arrived for the evening show, a young man named Zhou Yue left from the afternoon show. A huge fan of Qin Yi, he took notes in his notebook of the play he watched while writing a play of his own. Except he forgot his notebook in the VIP box. The same box Luanyun and her maid sit in.
Halfway through the show, Luanyun spied the notebook. Even though she had critiques, she was impressed with the play. Zhou Yue returned to get the book back. Both of them fell for the other.
Yue inspired Luanyun with his creative gumption, and she inspired him with her take on originality and sincerity. When they parted, they couldn’t stop thinking about each other. Yue spent the next few days and nights doing nothing but writing his play.
He work-shopped it to Qin Yi, who was intrigued by the premise. Secretly, he arranged for his troupe to perform this play and to make sure that Princess Luanyun would see it opening night.
The newspapers were talking about the “secret love affair” between the princess and the troupe. Eventually, Yue and Luanyun found each other again, and they got engaged. It shocked all the Cloud nobility, but she had no regrets. She also commissioned Qin Yi to make her wedding gown.
Back at the Tea Party, Yi finishes the interview and mingles with the crowd. He spots Yue and Luanyun, and they catch up for a few minutes. The young couple is happy, and Qin Yi is proud to make a happily ever after come true.
Connections
-In the Index, Qin Yi’s profile mentions that he thinks of love “like a reflection in the water which can disappear once touched.” He is part of another love story, Flower in the Mirror, where that love doesn’t last. So he’s surprised that this one ended happily.
-Zhou Yue references the play Out the Phoenix Palace in his notes. (This is confirmed in the Index.) This is most likely the reason Qin Yi named the wedding dress after Yue’s favorite play.
Fun Facts
-The name ”yue” means moon.
-My display photo looks like she has freckles. That was actually poor timing on my part, as one of the animated butterflies was flying past, and I accidentally caught it as I took the picture.
-Peach blossoms in Chinese floriography symbolize spring, love, and beauty. When they bloom, it’s a special time to get married.
