“Then why couldn’t you answer your phone?”
Kogami doesn’t want to say he’s angry, nor does he even want to say he’s disappointed. He’s worried more than anything, and it’s taking him everything to not be the parent that he doesn’t want to be towards Yukako: the overprotective one that lectures her.
Even though he’s mastered a poker face long ago, it must show on his features that he is incredibly displeased based on the way that Yukako’s body makes itself smaller and how her gaze on his wavers. He tries to even out his expression, but he knows it’s too late. He’s upset her. He only hopes she knows that this upsets him just as much as it’s upsetting her.
“Yukako,” he begins, lifting a hand to his temples to pinch. “I understand you. I do. Tokyo’s a big, exciting place. It’s not Morioh. And I trust you, I really do… and I trust your friends enough. They seem like a fun bunch.”
“... But I want you to understand that there are still rules that you have to follow when you’re here.”
He can’t be the cool dad all the time – that’s no way to raise a child, even though he tries to be a bit more lenient on her than Hisae is. At the end of the day, though, she’s a teenage girl in a big city. While he trusts Yukako to keep her safe, there are still danges in Tokyo that Kogami wants to desperately protect her from, and he can’t do that when she’s not answering her phone.
“Answer your phone when I call or text. Try to be home by the time we agree that you’d be home. For all I know, you could’ve been snatched up by someone, getting scammed into taking some shady job, or…”
He sighs again, sinking further into his chair, trying to push those thoughts away. No. She’s safe. Shaken up by this talk, surely, but safe. Perhaps that’s what matters at the end of the day, though Kogami doesn’t quite feel like he’s done with this. “... I’m not going to keep you. Go to your room. We’ll have this discussion later. I’m glad to see you’re safe.”
