Bond set for mom who drove kids into ocean
A judge set bond Saturday for a pregnant South Carolina woman who drove her minivan into the ocean with her three children inside. Ebony Wilkerson appeared in a Florida courtroom after being charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated child abuse involving great injury. On Tuesday, a Daytona Beach officer witnessed Wilkerson's Honda Odyssey van "driving recklessly" in the surf before it turned and drove into the Atlantic Ocean. Bystanders and lifeguards rushed to the vehicle to rescue the three children inside -- ages 10, 9 and 3. After the judge set Wilkerson's bond at $1.2 million -- $300,000 for each count of attempted murder and $100,000 for each count of child abuse, Wilkerson tried to dispute the amount. "That is too much," she told the judge. As Wilkerson was taken away from the courtroom, she could be heard saying repeatedly, "It doesn't make sense." James Purdy, Wilkerson's public defender, said he will be setting up a bond hearing at the court's earliest convenience. Witnesses told investigators the children were screaming for help after Wilkerson's vehicle went into the water. Tim Tesseneer, one of the rescuers at the scene, told HLN affiliate WESH that two of the kids in the back seat were crying and saying, "Our mommy's trying to kill us." "She actually told them to close their eyes and go to sleep. She was taking them to a better place," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said at a news conference Friday. Authorities said witnesses told them that Wilkerson tried to stop them from entering the vehicle. Hours before Wilkerson drove into the water, she was pulled over by Daytona Beach police because her sister had called 911 and reported that she was “having psychosis or something.” “She’s talking about Jesus and that there’s demons in my house,” the sister told a dispatcher. Wilkerson, who is nearly 30 weeks pregnant, was interviewed by police for approximately 30 minutes at the time, but officers concluded that she was “lucid, aware of her surroundings, able to care for herself and her children,” according to a police report. Wilkerson told authorities she wasn't trying to harm her kids and she was worried that her ex-husband would find and hurt them. Johnson said investigators have not found any evidence of a history of mental illness. Wilkerson's children are still in state custody.
