in the mid 17th century (1600s) men began wearing much larger breeches (trousers) than they had previously, so much so that one man wrote in his diary that apparently his fashionable friend disclosed to him that when he put his breeches on that morning he’d accidentally put both legs through one leg hole & didn’t notice until halfway through the day, this style of trouser was called petticoat breeches & was sometimes gathered with ribbon at the waist & knee.
