A WEEK IN WILDLIFE (31/03/2014):
Piipshow
A Norwegian site with a live stream of their bird feeder made up to look like a coffee shop. If you don’t have second screen in your office that you can take over for an hour or two with a full-screen feed of the box, or if you’re just not as sad as me, then you can see the day’s highlights further down. As I write this a particularly crafty squirrel is untying a string of nuts for himself.
Lions, lions, lions
So now we know where lions came from. Due to lions living in comparatively tropical regions fossil records are sparse, but now a journal by BMC Evolutionary Biology has detailed the evolutionary history of Panthera Leo. As an aside, West African lions are seriously under threat; a six year study has now estimated that there are less than 250 mature breeding pairs left in the wild. Large-scale plantations for cotton and food crops have contributed significantly to the decline of the lions in the last decade and a lack of funding could hinder their protection even further.
Free-zing Willy
A poor pun, but an important topic. Japan has accepted a ruling by the UN banning their ‘scientific expeditions’ to Antarctic waters; and by scientific expeditions I mean whaling trips. Japan has argued that minke whales and a number of other species are plentiful and that its whaling activities are sustainable. Thankfully that argument has not held up, so this is a whale-y good victory for the Cetaceans.
Mammal Photographer of the Year
Nuf’ said. Brilliant photos of mammals in Britain, including a bottlenose dolphin in Scotland’s Moray Firth.
