It takes everything in Lloyd not to cry at those words, evident by the expression on his face, by the way his shoulders begin to tremble. Somehow.. Martel had the amazing ability of always knowing what people needed to hear; recalling countless times in the past where she had unknowingly been a beacon of support for Lloyd, helping him cope through some of his toughest times on the island. He knew he could let his walls down around her, that she would never judge him for feeling the things that he did; reassured by the way she was squeezing his hand, and smiling at him gently as she always did. 

Even so.. there was a part of Lloyd that felt as though he did not deserve to fall apart in front of Martel as they were, even despite all the support she was offering to him. Knowing her, she might not see it as he did whatsoever, but Lloyd couldn’t ignore the feeling hanging over him, of the memory that was replaying in his head every time he looked in her eyes. He stayed quiet for a moment, doing his best to steady himself-- and when he was finally able to, he returned the pressure around the hand Martel was holding onto with a squeeze of his own.

“.. if it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I’d be able to hold myself together at all right now. You saved my mom, Martel.. it was because of you that my dad and I could be with her one last time before she had to go.”

Martel gave his family back to him, while Lloyd had taken hers away. No matter if they had moved on from that, that was something he would hold onto for the rest of his life-- even now, when all Martel wanted was to be there for Lloyd when he needed her. 

But she always deserved that support in return. Maybe it was beyond anything he was capable of doing, but that would never stop Lloyd from doing what he could; for being that same beacon she sought to be for everyone else around her.

“If she left this place while she was still a monster.. if.. we didn’t get to say goodbye to her this time.. I don’t know what I would have done. I don’t know what it would’ve done to my dad, and thinking about that scares me more than I’d like to admit.”

“But you put yourself at risk for her-- for all of us. My mom gave us both the courage to keep going without her, to live on and keep her memory with us; and if you hadn’t healed her, neither of us would have that. So even if you’re proud of me, it’s because of you that I can get past this. You’re the one who gave me the strength to keep going.”

“I don’t know if I can ever repay you, but I’ll never forget what you did for me and my family. Thank you, Martel. For everything.”
