“For 50 years I taught Chinese characters, classic Confucian literature and classic calligraphy, which were once taught at a type of village school in the past. As Koreans, we used to be known as the people from ‘the well-mannered country of the East’, but I think these days the image of our society pales in comparison with that definition. We hide, cheat, murder….. we have changed a lot. What people are doing now is inhuman. My lessons taught how to be human beings, and I am proud of what I contributed. Before it’s my time, I would like to teach more, even just to one person, then I can die.”

“난 옛날에 서당에서 가르치던 한학과, 사서구경, 서예를 50년 동안 가르쳤어. 우리는 동방예의지국의 사람들인데, 우리의 현대 사회 모습은 그 의미가 많이 무색해진 것 같아. 숨기고 사기치고 살인하고...시대가 바뀌었어. 그건 우리가 인간답지 못 해서 그래. 내 가르침이 우리가 인간답게 하는데 기여한다는 점에 난 긍지를 갖고 있어. 죽기 전에 한 사람이라도 더 가르치고 죽고 싶어.”
