A #weighhouse is a public building within which goods are weighed. Here is an example in #arras . Weigh houses were especially common in the #netherlands 🇳🇱 , #germany 🇩🇪 where they are called waag and waage respectively (both meaning "scale") and #poland 🇵🇱 (waga miejska, "town/city scales", as in #kraków and #poznań ). There's been a Weigh House inside the Grainger Market ever since the Market first opened. The original Weigh House was located on Alley 1, and the current Weigh House is in a different position, straddling Alley 1 & Alley 2. It's purpose was to enable shoppers to check the weight of their fish, meat and fresh produce. Nowadays you can get yourself weighed for 30p and find out what's happening in and around parts of Newcastle from the information boards. There's also a replica of a painting by Henry Parker, depicting the banquet which commemorated the opening of the Grainger Market in 1835. Please note the Weigh House is run by the City Council.
