Swiss historian, Johannes Müller, friend of Goethe, Schiller, Herder & Voltaire, describing a special "friendship" in a letter to his family (January 28, 1797)
In August 1802 he wrote in a letter to another "friend":
"I am so proud of whatever I said about my deep love for you. ... I won't hide it."
#Weimar gays#apparently he was very open about his 'friendships' with men#the book i'm reading suggests Müller's writings became something like “part of a queer canon” in the 19th century#he was also shunned and had to leave vienna in 1803 because he was scammed by one of his students pretending to be a male lover via letters#and guess who was the one to offer him help?#yes it was Goethe who offered him work in Weimar#queer solidarity i guess???#Goethe#Schiller#obsessed#like many gays of the time he also seems to have had “affairs” with young men / boys so idk he's probably not the icon we'd want him to be#queer history#queer memory
