Weird Milk 2019 Single Reviews

Anything You Want - 6.5/10 A total “retro jam” complete with tasteful fadeout, guitar manipulations, and really great vocals.  Funky, to the point, repetitive without being annoying, but with an agenda about “love” one cannot argue against. 

Honey, I’m Around - 7/10 The ‘oohs’ are whimsical and bring me back to a simpler time, then they come in with a high vocal harmony and pithy keyboard element layered over some fun guitar sounds. Beachy, romantic, goofy, and delightfully clamorous.  Time Machine - 5/10 Strong intro, startles you into the middle then pulls you back, and continues to do this throughout the song; loud then soft, loud then soft, but mostly simple. The great comeuppance hits very near the end of the song when they bring it all together to finally let you rest, and then it’s just over. Too much fluctuation without enough resolution in the end; too short of a song, it didn’t sound done yet when it finished.

Capping off a whirlwind twelve months, the quintet’s latest effort follows acclaimed singles Anything You Want and Honey, I’m Around, having received widespread praise across the BBC Radio 1/6 Music airwaves (Annie Mac, Jack Saunders, Steve Lamacq) and growing support throughout the online community (NME, DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Dork) as their profile continues to soar. Fresh from touring alongside fellow do-woppers Trudy and the Romance across the UK, the baroque pop quartet will be playing The Great Escape’s First Fifty showcase later this month in London where their assured live show, honed via a series of slots with the likes of Frank Carter, Pip Blom and Thyla, will be demonstrated in full force. Discussing their forthcoming single release, songwriter/drummer Charlie Glover-Wright explained: “Time Machine came from a brief obsession with the documentary Cosmos. I became fascinated with the scientists and how they had the determination and will to invent and create things that no-one else had ever even considered were possible! So we had a conversation about how you’d go about trying to make a time machine. You’d read lots of books by the leading scientists in the field and then you’d study for a long time and then you’d give it a go. The world’s a scary place right now so we thought about getting the heck outta here – just for a little while”. With plans already afoot for 2020, including their debut EP and debut trip stateside for SXSW, Weird Milk are primed for the spotlight and look set to take full advantage. If you think about it, it’s kind of weird how milk works. Not to get into nitty gritty details, but biologically, it’s interesting how our bodies produce the rich nutrient to nourish other bodies. As it turns out, there’s a budding new band named Weird Milk who are very nourishing too, though in a very different sense, of course. They channel much nostalgia in their delectable baroque pop and garage rock. The new band from North London charm us to no end with their soothing new release ‘Honey, I’m Around’, giving us the perfect balance of off-center quirky and sweetly lilting while channeling influences like The Beach Boys, The Strokes, and Rex Orange County in their own eccentric, eclectic style. Bits of early Arctic Monkeys and hints of ever buzzing Wallows can also be found in its saccharine harmonies and smoky drawl. The band explained: “This song touches on themes of romance and escapism, whilst cherishing the notion that sometimes it is important to be patient and persistent in one’s endeavours, without lingering in the past”.
