"What did Dove want with the Ferryman's token?"
"The-The coin? Is that what it's called? I genuinely don't know. I can tell you who had it before /Dove/ did-"
"Who then?"
"Some- some rich fuck, named.... Cecil Howe. Heir to some fortune wrapped up in the occult trading networks in Louisville and Manhattan-"
"Why kill him? Why not just steal the coin?"
"I- Dove said that-- that he wasn't the kind of man you let live. He did things to people. Used his ties with the arcane underworld."
"What could he do?"
"No idea. I-I didn't want to know that part. I just got told what I needed too, and I did the job, same as always."
"Mm... and you don't know where the coin is?"
"No- Why are you so obsessed with it?--"
"I'm asking questions here, Mischa, please."
"..."
"Thank you-- now, you had interactions with multiple Howes it seems.... Cecil and a.... Terrence? Did Terrence have anything to do with the coin?"
"Dove had separate reasons for that hit."
"Oh?"
"Well- kinda sorta-- Terrence is a Howe, so Dove felt... threatened by that-- but, the more direct reason was-- was that Terrence was doing some... odd shit for Urbanshade. H-he was 'Holdin' something for em'. That's how Dove put it."
"Holding something? Did you ever learn what?"
"No. No-- just... whatever it was... it had Dove shaken. bad. I think... maybe that's half the reason the hit went sour. We were both nervous."
"Again- I hate to keep playing the morality police-- especially with a body count of my own-- but-- why kill him? Why not just... detain him? rend this 'thing he was holding' from him and scare his blonde little head into submission?"
"Dove.... I trust them with my life. I owe them my life... I was kicked out, starving on the streets before they found me. They'd shown me their love... in so many ways up until that day. A-and I felt like-- all I'd done was fall short. So when Dove said 'trust me, this thing is better dead then walking' I just.... I trusted him. A-and I went in-- takin' charge of that hit, wanting to make them proud, wanting to make them feel as safe and as heard and as loved as they made me feel. But--"
"Terrence and his friend were two steps ahead of you..."
"Well... friend-SUH... he had security all over the joint by the time we--"
"Again-- I wasn't referring to what you think I was, Mr.Lovett."
".... What?"
"What if.... what if I told you I think I know /why/ Dove wanted not only the Howes dead-- but Terrence himself?"
"I'd call you a liar."
"But would you mean that? Given what I'm holding? Given what I've been paraphrasing to you for the past forty minutes?"
"...N-no."
"Exactly."
"So... so why? Why did Dove want them all dead?"
"For any good reason a woman running from death would... they were ensuring all off death's spawn wouldn't be able to find them. And I suppose... by extension... you."
