Is it okay to ask what some of your influences were when you began this story? Did you always envision it as a CYOA or did you perhaps have a more traditional novel planned? Do you find it more fun to write for a particular character than the others?
When I first started writing it, I didn’t really think about influences BUT thinking about it now and while I was writing it, Fire Emblem Fates (and a bit of Three Houses too) comes to mind as a bit of an influence there. The idea of the two paths and the war between them, etc. Dragon Age Origins also, I mentioned that on the forum. Critical Role (if you haven’t heard of it, I have to recommend it, it’s amazing. “A bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors playing dnd”) influenced this a bit too, world-building wise. I’m in awe of Mathew Mercer’s genius. I can’t compare to him at all, but his world helped me in understanding and building mine.
I did envision this as a CYOA game. When I came up with the idea, I had The Mage and The Warrior in mind at the start, and I knew it wouldn’t work quite as effectively if it was just a novelization. Being able to make choices and determine who you are as a character fit the story I was envisioning better, and I’ve been a long-time gamer of COG so I knew I wanted to use their platform.
As for particular characters that I like to write… hmmm. I mentioned earlier I love them all equally, but I do like how angsty/broody Marcol is. He’s a fun one for me. And Elias/Ellyn’s headspace is a comfortable one for me to dive into, probably because I identify with them the most out of the main cast.
