Wheels: The Importance of Running in Circles. -There is more than one wheel listed here, please read through them and also do your own research before making your choice. I am NOT promoting any wheel, simply referring to some available and elaborating on my experiences with any I have owned.
Some owners may underestimate the need for an exercise wheel for their Sugar Gliders, but I assure you that it is VERY important. The reasons Sugar Gliders are born built like a kite is because they run and glide from tree to tree all throughout the night. Whether for foraging or for playtime, these little guys stay active from the minute they wake up until they are all tired enough to sleep. Mine wake up at about 10 PM, every night, like clockwork. They are up until about 8 A.M., which is when they all go in their little nest to sleep. Except for Bam-Bam, my pairs first born, he stays up shrieking loudly until 10, sometimes 11 AM. I am pretty sure that what he wants to do is play, and he carries on in the morning for someone to keep playing with him. The first thing I hear when they are up, is the spinning of the wheel. Sometimes I wait until I hear the wheel going to feed them, because I know they're awake. They run in circles from the minute they are awake, and run steady, taking turns _____________________________________________________________
Sugar Glider Rider
This is a fairly new maker, I found on Etsy. I intend on getting these soon for my Gliders, as they appear safer than my Wodent Wheel. It is also equal in size and price. After reading so many danger stories about Wodent Wheels, I will be changing mine as soon as I can. I will update this entry with a review after I make my purchase. If you do have a Wodent Wheel please read all the information I have below about non-stop maintenance until you are able to replace it with a safer wheel. It also isn’t so bad that this one pictured above comes in so many colors! The Stealth Wheel
I personally have no experience with this wheel, because it is out of my price range. It is nearly $60 bucks. If you have the money, why not? I would if I could.... Below are 2 different links for this wheel: http://petocart.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=197039&gclid=Cj0KEQiA1dWyBRDqiJye6LjkhfIBEiQAw06ITsiVuT4Tz3J9zQbQ53m2Iu4x_jDIuB-roQuoLEeRHVIaAgEt8P8HAQ http://www.bambuzo.com/us/pet-exercise-wheel-pet-wheel-for-sugar-gliders-rats-stealth-wheel-red-with-stand.html?gclid=Cj0KEQiA1dWyBRDqiJye6LjkhfIBEiQAw06ITqwQqQ2ClwBR815fookVYJF-nLrnx7VETDw7XocK048aAt_88P8HAQ ____________________________________________________________
Wodent Wheels - Used to be my first choice, but in light of recent knowledge, I would not recommend it, however I am providing the instructions I follow when using one.
(I have an 11 inch Senior Wodent Wheel)The wheel I have has several pieces, and there have been times where I had misplaced a small part and they would be with out the wheel for a day or two until the part was located. On those days, they stood up later than usual, my younger Glider, Gizmo, would sometimes still be scurrying around at 11:45 in the morning. That is how much energy they burn on the wheel, about 4 hours of a sleep difference. I also hear a lot more bickering among my Gliders throughout the evening, some cranky crab noises mostly, but there is a definite noticeable noise difference. A serious problem happens however when people mistakenly buy wheels intended for hamsters and/or gerbils. Wire wheels, of any kind, that resemble a strainer, are HORRIFIC. It is a high risk and a 99% guarantee that one of your will be seriously injured. How would you feel, if the only time you could go for a walk or run, you were forced to do so on a spaghetti strainer? I mean yes, its possible, but it wouldn't be comfortable. And what if you got your toe caught while you were on your way? How would you get it out? Remember, a sugar glider doesn't think like we do. We might, wiggle our toe to get it out, or pull or twist in a way to relieve the pressure. The mind of a glider thinks, oh no, I’m stuck, must get out, must get out, pull, pull, bite, chew. When a sugar glider is stuck in a situation like that they do not know how to gently remove themselves. They display seizure like behavior and will hurt themselves to get free.
The one featured is the same one I have in my large cage, it is a; Senor 11 inch Wodent Wheel. I replace mine every year, and I clean it every other day. There are several alternatives, as I mentioned in an earlier, to the Wodent Wheel. There are horror stories for Wodent Wheels out there, however, I have not had any issues myself, although I am going to change it A.S.A.P. as I do not want to wait for something bad to happen. I would also like to note, that ANY wheel can cause problems if it is not often cleaned and maintained. I can tell right away if their wheel appears unsteady, off the track, too dirty... anything. I check it frequently. No matter what wheel you have, please check it frequently as well. Some of the horror stories involved the small metal bar that is in the center of the wheel getting sticky or something. Tails get caught - and gliders get hurt. Stories vary but I think this was a frequent explanation.I have found a way to avoid that specific problem. First, I took a regular BIC pen. I measured the space between the wheel centers, where the metal bar is exposed. Chip and Daisy now share a smaller 8 inch Wodent Wheel, and my big cage has the 11 inch Senior Wodent Wheel. The sizes of the space between the bars is different. Using a serrated knife, I cut the BIC pen a little bigger than the measurement and used a nail file I shortened it down.
The next step is slowly slicing a line from one end of the BIC pen piece to the other. The reason is that the piece will be too tight unless you cut it to allow it to fit like a glove. This piece will cover the metal bar with plastic, keeping the bar safe from constant buildup of sticky residue. Clean this piece every time you clean your wheel. This piece also steadies out the wheel a bit more. If you find your wheel makes noise, use a medical mini-dropper to apply a few drops of mineral oil at the corners [see pics below]. When the wheel is out, I use Lysol Disinfecting Wipes to wipe the bar down thoroughly. The Nail-Trimming Advantage, but again I have found out recently this might not be as safe as I originally thought, please be careful! The Sandy Nail Trimmer Track for the Wodent Wheel. I left my trimmer track in the wheel for a certain amount of time before switching it back to regular, but for both my cages it is different, in the big cage, with 5 Gliders - the sand track trimmer I leave in 3-4 days at a time, every 2 weeks. For the cage with 2 Gliders - the sand track trimmer I left in for only 1-2 days at a time every two weeks. I will not include a link for this wheel, as in light of new knowledge I can no longer proudly recommend a wheel that has so much documented injury attached to it. Perhaps Wodent Wheel should look into creating a safer wheel. ___________________________________________________________
Wheel Tip:
If you find your wheel makes noise like the metal piece might be grinding or squeaking in any area, use a medical mini-dropper to apply a few drops of mineral oil where the pieces are rubbing together [see pic below].
PLEASE DO ALL WHEEL CLEANING DURING THE DAY, WHILE THE GLIDERS ARE ASLEEP! It will be quite difficult to get it back in there when they are awake, they will try to run in it before you even get it fully back on the bar! It’s cute, but for a hassle free experience I recommend you do this during the day.
If anyone has a review, good or bad, or any new information for/about an above mentioned wheel, and would like to have it added here, please contact me!
