Eyes shot open in the dark as a pained cry rang out. The brunet quickly sat in the bed as a hand immediately shot up to his neck as if he was protecting it. Rhys could feel that his cheeks where wet from crying, he could still feel mores tears come as he sat there. He was practically shaking as he stared into the darkness of the room.
The hand that shot up to his neck rested gently against his flesh, the cool metal of his hand serving as a sobering reminder that he was awake. That he was no longer in that nightmare. That he wasn’t feeling his flesh torn from his throat and the hot wetness of the growing pool of blood beneath him. That he wasn’t laying in the Highlands staring at the gray filled sky thinking that was the day he was going to die all from a stupid mistake.
Metal fingers ran across the scar at his neck. He couldn’t stop the shaking, he couldn’t stop his crying as he began to think. Thinking about his change of life style and all the choices he has made up until now. How hard it was hitting him that any day, at any time, could be his last on this god forsaken planet. One misstep, one wrong move and it was all done and gone.
A sob rose past his lips only to be immediately silence by another hand. The bandit shook harder as more thoughts rattled around in his brain so late at night. What he was used to up on Helios versus what he was getting used to on Pandora where completely different. At least on Helios he knew what to do to survive up there. At least he could avoid death so much easier. Down here there where no rules you could dodge and weave between to still succeed. Down here there isn’t anything.
Rhys covered his face with his hands trying to bit back more sobs and tears. He didn’t want to feel this way but he couldn’t stop it. He didn’t want to think about all this and everything that lead up to it.
“Please just let me sleep...”
For my anon
So here it is. It's not perfect or amazing or anything but here it is Diana thought her new Greek History teacher was a little odd. Maybe it was just the new school jitters, or her wild imagination, but he seemed to be fascinated with her. Then again, she was moving to this school in the middle of January, which probably deserved some curiosity. Diana was currently sitting in Mr. Caduce's class, tapping her pen on her notebook and feeling bored. This class was no challenge for her, Diana's mother had come to America from Greece when she was only nineteen years old. Now thirty six, Lea Menodora spent her days at the local tailor shop, mending clothes and telling stories that had been passed down through her family, generation by generation. Diana often wondered why her mother ever left Greece, she spoke about so often. There was, however, one advantage to Lea's constant talk of her heritage, and it was that Diana already knew 90% of this course's material. She stared at her minimalistic notes, and was brought out of her thoughts abruptly by her teachers voice. "Diana? Do you know the answer?" She blushed, making eye contact with the frowning man. Mr. Caduce was young, tall, and lean with a lock of brunette hair that often fell in his eyes. And, oh my, those eyes. They were bright blue, and sparkled and shined as he told incredible stories of battles and the Greek gods. He talked about them in first person, as if he had seen them all with his own eyes. He described details that only someone who had seen them would know, and right now those cerulean orbs were pressed down on Diana. Could you repeat the question?" The class twittered with laughter, and Diana felt a blush creeping up on her cheeks, but kept her eyes on her teacher, refusing to let her embarrassment get the best of her. "According to legend, who were the two men fighting over Helen of Troy?" The teacher gave her a comforting smile, and glared slightly at the ones laughing, who quickly quieted. Diana sighed with relief, her mother had told her this story just yesterday. "The two men are Menelaus of Sparta and Paris of Troy, but I don't believe calling her Helen of Troy is accurate... Is it sir?" The man cocked his head to the side and gave the girl an inquisitive look. "Why is that, Diana?" Shifting in her seat and continued on. "Helen was married to Menelaus first, making her queen of Laconia. Menelaus hailed from Sparta, so wouldn't she be Helen of Sparta, not Helen of Troy?" Silence reigned over the classroom for a minute as all eyes turned on Diana. She stared back defiantly at the other students, then their elder gave a booming laugh. "Well, it turns out one of you has a clue what I'm saying after all! Yes, Diana, you would be right in your logic that truthfully, she would be Helen of Sparta. However textbooks, Homer, and the final exam will know her as Helen of Troy, so it's best that we remember her the wrong way. Now Menelaus and Paris were fighting over her, and-" He was cut off by the obnoxious drone of the bell, and the students began to pack up. "Homework for tonight is to write a short paragraph about the battle components of the Trojan war. Diana, could you stay after please?" Diana sighed and zipped up her bag letting it hang from one shoulder. As the door shut, she walked over to the teachers desk in the back corner. "Yes, sir?" He took off his glasses and wiped them on his neck tie, glancing up at the teenager. "How are you adjusting Diana? Everything ok?," She relaxed, letting an easy grin wash over her face. This was just a check up, nothing to worry about. "Yep. Classes are good, and I think, after six weeks, I'm finally settling in," Mr. Caduce nodded, perching his hornrimmed glasses back on his face. "I did have a question, though. Miss Menodora, why are you in my class?" Diana's eyebrows furrowed, her mind reeling. What sort of a question was that? "I'm sorry?" She said in confusion, and the man sighed. "Diana, obviously you are extremely well versed in Greek history, why would you need, or want, to be in this class? You don't seem like the type of student who would chose an easy course for an easy 'A'. At least not to me, anyway." Taking a few seconds to work out her answer Diana sighed and finally explained. "It's my mom. She's from Greece, and when she saw that I could take an extra Greek history class, she was all for it. She checked off the box before I had a chance to tell her that I didn't really need a Greek history class." The teacher nodded, and studied his student. Diana was supremely confused, and more than a little uncomfortable under such scrutiny. Then he stood, and went over to the oak cabinet that stood in the back of the room off to the side. There were intricate carvings on it, depicting the gods in various poses. Inside the cabinet was a number of books and bobbles. Mr. Caduce took out a thick, tall leather bound novel and gave it to Diana. ""Here, a little extra reading. I simply won't have a student who isn't challenged in my class. This is a book on Greek mythology. It's mainly about the gods and their legends. Now, I'm sure you have heard all of these stories before, but perhaps a new angle on them wouldn't hurt. Go run off, or you'll miss your bus," As her teacher spoke Diana cherished the book. It had curling lettering and fantastic pictures. She flipped through it, settling on a picture of Zeus sitting regally on his throne. With her teachers last words, she snapped the book shut and cradled it under her arm. With her teachers last words she snapped the book shut and tucked it under her arm. "Thanks, Mr. Caduce, this is awesome! See you tomorrow!" Diana waved and ran out of the room, trying in vain to catch up to her bus. She watched the buses drive by her and sighed in annoyance. This was the fifth time she had missed the bus in the last two weeks, and her mom had overtime tonight. Looks like she had a choice. Walk home, and risk getting lost, or just sitting and waiting it out. Diana reclined herself on a bench outside of her school, watching the seniors hang out in their parking lot, and thought deeply. What should she do? She opened the mythology book and stared again at the picture of Zeus. He looked very familiar yet alien at the same time. He reminded her of someone but she just couldn't remember. "Hey, Menodora, don't you have someplace to be?" It was her gym teacher, Ms. Sowa. The woman stood there, hands on hips, frowning in the direction of the sophomore. "Yes, ma'am, I was just getting a little rest before I start my walk home" Diana called, and she stood to meet her teacher. "Do you normally walk home Diana? I have seen you getting on a bus before," Diana sighed internally, and went into an explanation. "I just missed the bus. I'm gonna walk home for now but I'm fine," the teacher's eyes hardened. "It's the middle of winter, Miss Menodora, there is no way you can walk home," Just as the younger was about to begin protesting, someone cut off both women. "Hey, Sowa, don't worry! I can drive the little sister home!" There stood a boy... a rather unusual boy, at that. He had wavy blonde hair and a tan, an odd occurrence, seeing as it was winter in New York. His clothing was bizarre as well. He wore a tee shirt with a shark on it and baggy cargo shorts, despite the fact that it was only 45 degrees out. No way am I going with that crazy kid. Who wears shorts in winter? she thought incredulously. Luckily, her gym teacher agreed. "Mr. Geneva, why on earth would I allow you to drive a student, especially one that you only just met, home? That's completely inappropriate." The senior student sighed impatiently, then walked closer to them. "How bout this... You give your number to Miss Diana over here, and when she gets home she can text you. That way you know she's completely safe from harm, and she doesn't have to wait for her mom to get here," "Fine. I suppose that would work. Please text me as soon as you get home, Diana, here is my number." A cream colored business card flashed out of her hand, and landed in Diana's palm. She read the card and her eyes brightened with curiosity. Huh. Minerva. What a strange name! The only Minerva that Diana could think of was from Harry Potter, and somehow, she didn't think her gym teacher had a summer job at Hogwarts. Whatever it's just a name. "Thanks Minnie, see you tomorrow fifth!" The kid yelled, and grabbing Diana's hand, ran off towards the senior lot. The gym teacher called back something that suspiciously sounded like detention, but they were too far away to hear properly. "B T dubs my name is Dylan Geneva. But you can call me Dylan. Or Dyl. Or the D-Dog. Or Dyl the super cool ama-" Diana cut him off with a raised eyebrow. "I think Dylan will do. How did you know my name was Diana?" He beamed at her. "Easy, Sowa was talking pretty loud. We could hear it all the way here in senior lot. I like you, little sister, you don't beat around the bush," Diana felt a prickle of annoyance trail up her spine. "Why do you keep calling me little sister?! We aren't related!" He chuckled at her which amplified her negative feelings. She hated being laughed at. "Wow fiery too. I call everybody sister or brother. At least my friends," "We're friends?" Diana was a little shocked, to say the least. She knew this kid for all of fifteen minutes, and he was acting like they knew each other for centuries! "Yep. I've seen you around Di, and I like you. You've got a take no prisoners attitude, and you don't care what anybody thinks of you," Diana brushed away the compliments, not letting them deter her. "Don't call me Di; its Diana," she snapped, and he put his arms up in mock surrender. "How bout Moony? Diana is after all the goddess of the moon," Diana smirked, feeling just the slightest bit superior "No that's Artemis. Artemis is the goddess of the moon and the hunt," "And fertility, and virginity, and child birth, and yada yada yada. I meant the roman gods, Moony," Diana scoffed. "The Romans were just rip offs. Diana is Artemis, just with a different name," They had reached his car, and he held the door open for her with a gesture. "Don't start talking about yourself in the third person, Moons," before she could question that, he slammed the door and jumped around to the other side. "Now, where to?" She gave him the address, and he put it into the cars GPS. They cruised away from the school, and toward the deep woods. That was one of the benefits of living here. Montana had been mostly rolling hills and plains, but here there were still thick lush forests with tall climbable trees. It was perfect. "Wow you live pretty deep in the woods eh Moony," she was brought back to her annoying car mate. Ugh, boys. "Don't call me that, and yeah, I guess," The boy looked out the window then stiffened, and pressed down more on the gas. "Put on your seatbelt," he ordered, his voice turning less carefree and more direct. She normally would have protested being talked to this way, but listened when she saw his expression. She looked out his window, and saw what had gotten him so worried. It was huge and snow white, blending to the forest. Diana wondered how it didn't get its antlers stuck in the trees, as it bounded beside the car. It was a deer. I guess Bambi did grow up, she thought idly, still in shock at seeing such a mystifying creature. "Damn it. Okay sorry Diana, but I can't take you home right now. Guess we get to have a play date!" Diana's eyes widened in horror, as she stared at the boy. "What! Why?! Is that... Thing going to hurt us?!" Dylan's eyes softened, and he gazed at the girl. "Don't worry little sister, I'll protect you. Besides, when we get to my house the field should protect us. I just have to let everybody else know we have to meet there. Hold on tight to that book," Diana didn't understand, but she did curl her hands around the book. None of this made sense, but she had a feeling that the book, and this boy, were going to explain it all very soon. Pressing various buttons on the car Dylan made a group call with four other people. "Hey guys so I have Diana in the car with me here, and uh we are being chased by a giant deer," "What?!" The other four chorused, and Diana recognized one of those voices. Mr. Caduce! He was in on this? "Yeah it looks like a deer anyway. I'm bringing her back home, and can you link up to have everyone meet us there. I don't wanna stay on the phone to long, I wanna focus on getting our youngest home safely," he made a hairpin turn, which led back to the main roads. Diana looked behind them to see the creature gaining speed. "Um Dylan... Hurry up!" She said crying out, as it rammed he car with its impressive horns. Ignoring the sounds from the other callers, he ended the conversation with a quick goodbye, and turned to the girl. "Diana is your seatbelt on?" She nodded an affirmation, and he grinned putting his hand on the gear shift, "Then enjoy the ride, Moony," Diana was thrust back in her seat, as she watched the speedometer climb passing 80, 90, 100 miles per hour. How fast was he planning on going? "Damn this thing is fast, and we're still a few miles from home. Do you know how to shoot a crossbow?" She looked at him, and her voice raised with hysteria. "Do I look like I know how to shoot a crossbow?!" He shook his head, and kept his eyes peeled on the road. "Geez it was just a question. Never mind were almost home free," They were fastly approaching a huge mansion, surrounded by acres of land. As they approached, a thin reflective surface shone in a bubble about a mile all around the house. "Can we get through that thing!" Diana asked, and Dylan gave her that dumb half smile again. "We can. Bambi here can't," as he said that they passed the bubble, and the deer was thrown back by it. A loud snort ripped from its maw, as it pawed at the shield, trying to pass by. Dylan slowed the car rapidly, and with screeching tires, parked it in the middle of the small lot outside. He got out, and jogged over to Diana's side, where she was struggling to get unbelted. Adrenaline was coursing through her veins, and her heart raced with a passionate fury. A group of people poured out of the house, as she lashed at Dylan in a fury. "What was that!" She shrieked, and hit him with her fists in fury, " You force me to let you drive me home, and instead I get attacked by a giant deer, and I get a car chase from hell, and you act like this is some normal Tuesday!" Diana trembled with fury, and someone went to hold her back. She hit them too but lower, trying to make sure that this man would not be reproducing for awhile. "Dont. Touch. Me. Why the hell am I at your house! Take me home now!" She ordered, and Dylan rubbed at his neck in embarrassment. "We can't?" He started trying to say, but Diana simply growled in fury and pulled out her phone. She unlocked it with furious taps. "Fine fine won't take me home? I'll just call the cops to take me home, and arrest your asses while I'm at it!" The phone was plucked out of her hands by nimble fingers, and she finally turned around to see just who else was here. It was a group of about ten people with differing ages, the youngest seeming to be her own age. Standing among that group was her two teachers, Mr. Caduce and Ms.Sowa. "I don't believe this. This isn't happening, I'm obviously having a very vivid and imaginative lucid dream, and any moment now I'm gonna wake up and wonder why the hell I was dreaming this," one of the teens scoffed. He wore all black, and sneered in her direction "Well she certainly has the stubbornness of Artemis," Diana stared at him, while suddenly became very calm outwardly. "I get it now, I'm surrounded by crazy people. Your all mentally unstable, and I have also become mentally unstable. I'm pretending all of this is happening aren't I?" Dylan put a hand on her shoulder, and while it should have infuriated her, it calmed Diana drastically. "None of us are crazy, Moony just come inside, and let us explain alright?" She glared softly at the group of people, and exhaled loudly grabbing her book bag, and the leather book from Dylan's car. "You all have thirty minutes. Thirty. To explain what is going on, and tell me why I'm here," she said through her grinding teeth, and followed them into the large white house. Going up the steps, she passed huge columns that lifted up the roof over the front porch space. They lead her past the well furnished front area, and through to a large kitchen with a dining hall attached. One of the five adults set a tea kettle on the stove to boil, and everyone took a seat except for Diana who crossed her arms looking unimpressed. "Start talking." "Well...how do we go about this... You know those stories about the Greek gods? You know Posideon, Zeus, Artemis," they all stared at her, as Dylan slowed when saying this name. They all looked at her, as if everything should have made sense with that name, but she simply frowned deeper. "Keep. Going." "Well, they're real. All those stories are real. The gods actually live, and breathe, and exist, um and well...." Dylan trailed off again looking at the others, who all appeared awkward. "Spit it out already," "You're a god, Diana," So yeah I guess there could be a part two of you want or leave it there. I've always liked dubious endings. Haha gnight anon hope it's not to terrible
And here you are, the dominatrix who brought a nation to its knees… Nicely played
