Anyways, I've been getting back into country/folk/roots and my search for interesting artists has taken me back North to Stan Rogers via Corb Lund (I'm just discovering them but in fairness, I was a toddler when Lund's most recognizable album came out and Rogers died right around when my dad was born) and something about The Idiot as a song sticks with me.
The idea that you can convince yourself it's more noble to keep suffering, rather than accept help that's being freely offered, because it's somehow nobler. I think I said in one of these other posts that it can be easy to convince yourself you're some sort of monastic when you own nothing. That your poverty is part of some religious or moral vow. And (to butcher the song a little) that would make you an idiot, I suppose.
