I feel like some people mistake their emotional reaction to a piece of media for a critique of it

If something makes you upset, that doesn’t make it bad. Not to be neurodivergent about it but your reaction was probably a controllable variable tbh

Part of writing is understanding how the words you choose and the order you place them in is going to affect people, and using that knowledge and your skills to evoke specific emotions. In order to critique a work in a way that is insightful or useful to anyone, you should endeavor to prove that the creator was attempting to do something and did not succeed, or could have succeeded better.

If you did not like a work because of how it made you feel or what happened in it, but the creator succeeded in what they were trying to convey, it’s not bad, you just didn’t like it. Which is fine, but it’s not their problem, either.

My advice in that case is to attempt to appreciate the elements of craft you can identify in the work and move on to something you like more, or create something yourself.

Yelling at the creators on Twitter because you don’t want to regulate your emotional response and don’t conceive of them as full human beings is extremely gauche tbh
