the thing that bothers me about this wellness checkup, is that they barely acknowledged what she can do. The dr we saw (not her “normal” doctor, as we have only seen her twice) was so focused on the paper questionnaire assessment that she didn’t even see Zoe’s capabilities. Zoe loves her own language, she can speak and says some words and phrases pretty regularly. But since at the appointment, Zoe only spoke her language, the doctor said that she is speech delayed. She said that at 20 months, “Zoe should be using three or more worded sentences and should not be talking jibberish” so she made a referral to early on. We are now required to go through all their assessments. It just rubs me the wrong way, like I know they cant hurt and whatever, but Zoe knows words and says three worded sentences like “I got it” “I do it” but apparently these do not count. But more importantly I guess it rubs me the wrong way because she didn’t even acknowledge what zoe CAN do. such as put on her own pants and tennis shoes. brush her own teeth. stack her toys. Pick up toys. Help me put away groceries. she also mentioned that Zoe should be able to stack 8 blocks. (8 of their blocks were over Zoe’s head). Zoe can stack her own toys and even carrots and Cheerios. Lol those aren't even flat. Oh, also she should be able to draw a straight line. what 20 month old can draw a straight line? I personally am not going to give directions to Zoe when she is coloring. I do not want to ruin her childhood creativity by telling her no dont do that, do this.
I guess the point of this rant is, I think they should look at the big picture of the child, not just their paper assessments. Zoe focuses on what interests her such as climbing and exploring, not on what dr thinks she should be learning at this age. I am going to keeping letting her do what she wants to do. She is a very happy child.
