Arabian Frankincense, grown by Cyrus Hyde from a cutting given to him forty years ago by one of his longtime customers, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It's name means 'high quality incense' and has been traded for this purpose for 5,000 years in the Arabian peninsula, North Africa, and Somalia. It is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and Talmud for ritual use, and in the New Testament coupled with Myrrh as one of the gifts to baby Jesus. Cy has an amazing 120 acre herb farm called Well-Sweep, and was generous to show us around his greenhouses and root cellar. What an awesome surprise to run into Nathan Kleinman, cofounder of the Experimental Farm Network (I'm a board member) and his friends there. I definitely came home with some exciting plants (including Yerba Mate, three kinds of Tulsi, Nepitella, Gynura, Cenna, Meyer Lemon, and Aztec Sweet Herb) and a baggy of frankincense (grown elsewhere). #wellsweepherbfarm #francincense #arabianfrankincense (at Well-Sweep Herb Farm)
